1st ?: Win 7 to Ubuntu 12.04LTS server file sharing

I would like a (link to?) simple tutorial on the easiest way to get a Win7 PC and an Ubuntu Precise server to interact over a Crosstalk (yellow) Ethernet cable. I've done some file sharing using Win7 on both machines, but I'm developing the Linux box to be a home server and gatekeeper. So I don't want to go through my Linksys e1000 router at this time.

If there's no router in the mix then you'll need to set both machines up with a static IP on the same subnet, but other than that everything works like normal, including file sharing, ssh, ftp, etc.
