10/100 Mbps Hub/Switch Question

So someone explained to me that having a hub/switch filled with 100 Meg clients will incur a substantial hit to performance if a 10 Meg client is connected to it.

This analogy was made to me...

"It's as if you are having a conversation with a group of people where each person gets their fair share of time to talk. Only when you get to the 10 Meg person, he/she speaks 1/10th as fast and holds everyone up from continuing at a normal pace."

Is this true? Is it true for hubs AND switches? Could you explain further?

no not at all... I'm not too hot on networking really, there can be no way, especially when you use a switch over a hub, as the packets won't even be routed to that machine if it's not for that host, and if it is... well you're in 10mbps territory anyway....

But with respect to a hub, the other clients have to wait until the 10 Meg client is done talking right?

You know, the whole back off N and wait thing...

Yes. Hubs are only Half-Duplex, so one one port can talk in one direction at a time.

edit: nevermind... :o
