[Fedora 8] wlan0 is usually unable to start on startup.
 

Hi all,

I am running Fedora Core 8 on my desktop PC. When I start-up the PC, it always has a real difficult time getting past the startup scripts at the beginning. These are scripts that enable network interfaces, startup programs listed under the /etc/rc folders, etc. Whenever it tries to bring up the wlan0 interface, it usually (meaning about 90% of the time) fails to start-up and as a result the startup script just freezes right there. Since it freezes up, it can never get to the login screen. I don't remember exactly what the error is, but it looks like it is trying to perform a modprobe command of sorts on the wlan0 interface. I am using ndiswrapper for my wireless card since it does not have a native Linux driver for it.

Right now in my sysconfig-network options, I tell Fedora to not start-up wlan0 on startup so that it can always get to the login screen. So right now I just start-up wlan0 manually after I login and it seems to always work at that point. So I'm thinking there's some kind of timing issue going on during startup that causes wlan0 initialization to fail and freeze the start-up scripts most of the time. I have no idea where to start looking though. The problem is that I can't even get to the login screen whenever it fails so I can't look at any logs to see what is happening.

Have you tried adding the necessary commands to rc.local?
