What is the best smartphone to sync to ubuntu

My plan has been up with AT&T since 12/10 and I want to get a new phone. I currently have iPhone 3g and am planning on waiting to see what the new iPhone (iPhone 5) will be like. Problem is, if the new one is not significantly better than the current one(iPhone 4) I'm gonna go buy an android based phone. I was thinking of either a HTC or Motorola but I would like to know what my best option as far as a android based, 4g, at&t phone, that will play well with Linux. I am going to stay with at&t because they don't offer my plan any more and I will still get to keep it as long as I don't change it. any suggestions?

I have the Nokia N900, and it does everything I want it to...

take a look at Motorola Atrix, or Sansung Galaxy S 2.
I think any Android phone will connect to your computer as a external hard drive through USB cables.
You can share files using BT and even WiFi on 2.2 Froyo and new models. No special software is necessary for sharing files between system.

However, Samsung Galaxy use a crappy windows program named "Kies" to get updates, but it is really necessary only for that. I have a Galasy S myself so I can tell I used Kies only two times in my life: When I bought the phone to test it ans see what it does and a few months ago when it was necessary to upgrade the phone to 2.2 froyo.

Try to buy an Android 2.2 phone. Phones that run 2.2 can run 2.3 and has a big chance they can run 3.0 too.
Any phone play MP3 files and I use Arista Transcoder on Ubuntu to convert multi-gigabytes movies to a format and size that plays nice on the phone.

Motorola phones used to have the bootloader locked down, which means you will have problems if you want to run modified versions of kernel or want to upgrade your phone without to wait the official release. But I think this is just for really addicted phone developers and hard-to-die hackers, not the regular user. I would to buy a Atrix (i hope...).

Anyway, connectivity with your linux box should be your minor concern at this point.

How long have you had it? Are you concerned about the Nokia-M$ "partnership"? Short answers please, let's not hijack the thread w/o OP expressing interest in the N900.

I've had it for about a year and some now.... I love it to death, and not interested much about that partnership thing going on; I have linux on my phone, so I'm happy and free.... I'm about to give up on cell phones soon, so if it gets out of hand, then it looks like I won't be buying Nokia products anymore :)

And to the OP - I know three people that bought the Droid 2 within the past few weeks, and they all love it. I checked it out myself, and I am impressed with the speed. Overall, an android phone is an android phone though; I personally think there are too many phones being made nowadays...

First off thanks for the replys all. :) I was thinking about going with the motorola myself. My other concern is, What about updates? With my iPhone I have to use iTunes which is why it's jailbroken. Lol. Would I have to have a special software. Other than that, I forgot to mention I need the ability for push like email. By that I mean not having my phone fetch every 10 min. I use gmail. Thank you everyone.
