what is the best phone to install linux to, besides the n900?
Hello everyone,

I am looking to install the linux operating system to a phone with one big catch, it has to work with the sprint network. The reason it has to work with the sprint network is because i am in contract with them for 2 years... I know I know =(

I am looking for a good phone to install linux on and from the research i have done it seems that the nokia n900 gets the most love and support so i am looking for another good alternative.

I am hoping that someone here has some good advice on a certain phone that i can install linux on top of the current phone operating system (similar to virtual setup). I also still need to be able to use the phone as an actual phone which is why i need it to work with sprint, and i don't believe the n900 will work with sprint from what i have been told..

Well i hope someone has some specific answers for me and if you guys have any links for tutorials on how to install linux to a phone i would really appreciate because i am very interested in getting into the new area (new for me at least) of linux mobile.

I would love to here from people that have installed the linux operating system on phones other than the n900 and how they liked it and what they would suggest or not suggest.

Well I thank you all for your time,

Do you mean desktop linux on your phone? If so, then i don't know much about it, i'm pretty sure, that while in desktop linux, their is no way to make calls yet.
Like i said, i don't know much about desktop linux on phones, so i could be easily wrong, someone speakup is fo.

Caveat: I have not tried this. The person at this link apparently can install Debian to a Galaxy Nexus.

"So basically, I've been reading several different articles, etc. on running Debian and/or Ubuntu on Android. I did this on my Eris and D1 in the past, and I figured that it would work even better on the Galaxy Nexus. Of course it does... Anyway, it can be run from a loop mounted image or a separate partition on most phones. However, for phones like this one with no sdcard slot, it makes sense to just do the image thing."

There's an app on the Android Market that makes installing debian (chroot) as easy as installing any other app:

PS: install (apt-get/aptitude) tightvncserver if you wish to use a gui.

I want to thank you all for your time and your responses,

From the research that i have done it seems that the app on the android market -> "chroot debian" is a great way to install linux on phones but what i am wondering is this app available on all phones that have the android os and on the android market?

If this app is available on all android phones has anyone tried using it? Is it difficult to install linux on a phone with this app?

I really want to setup a gui win manager on my phone and from what i have seen vnc's seem to be the best way to go for that option. I would really like to use xfce, has anyone tried installing that on a phone?

Okay so if "chroot debian" can be installed on any phone that has android, could someone recommend a phone that will work with the sprint network?

The reason i need it to work with sprint is because i really want to install linux on a phone but i still want to be able to use my phone as a phone =-P

I thank you all for your time again,
