"Ubuntu for Android: This, ladies and gentlemen, is the future of computing"
Exciting news I believe. http://www.intomobile.com/2012/02/22...ure-computing/
"It’s an easy idea to understand. Use your smartphone like you’ve always been using it, but when you get home you put it in a dock that’s hooked up to a large display, keyboard, mouse, and boom, there’s your computer. Motorola tried to do this with their “Lapdock” concept, but it wasn’t an elegant solution since it only worked on their devices and required dedicated hardware. Ubuntu for Android makes any Android phone into a full blown Linux computer." |
Bummer :-( http://www.extremetech.com/computing...-for-android/2
"The other problem is that while Canonical is pushing the build to hardware manufacturers and mobile carriers, it has no plans to release it to the general public for independent development. This means that you won’t see a CyanogenMod ROM with this functionality built into it. While Ubuntu is open source, Canonical plans to control the release of this version. It’s possible that, given the ingenuity of Android users, one day there will be a leaked build, but such a thing wouldn’t be endorsed by the company." |
Hardly surprising. Canonical has drifted far from that painted by Shuttleworth in the early days (look at the restrictions on Unity contributions).
|
Ubuntu/Canonical/Shuttleworth become extremely popular because they said things would always be free and open. They are very far from that ideal nowadays and people are, rightly so, voting with their downloads and trying other things.
|
Ubuntu? No thanks, I don't want Android all bugged all up as well; thanks.

Unity wasnt made so that canonical could just give it away to mobile phone manufacturers, or tablet manufacturers, or users for that matter. It was made (at least in part) so that canonical had a GUI that they close the source on and sell to mobile phone/tablet manufacturers. |
So that means we will be hacking/warez UMobile? And this will become a commercial product?
|
I would buy an IPhone before I would buy a phone/tablet with Ubuntu. And I can't stand Apple.
|
why you would want to do this? Android is made fro android phone and works there and on android tabletts, android is also linux, at least linux based, and it works, so why you want to mess it up with ubuntu? really. I don`t no what for ideas some people have.
|
After all that years working with open source Shuttleworth and Canonical still not get that closing the source is not the way how to make money with it. What says that about the man and his visions?
