I also just reinstalled Lineage 13 without GApps. GApps is unnecessary. The phone works fine without it.

surprisingly many people don't realise that.
but it is important to notice that google is still baked right into the operating system. phoning home.
nevertheless, it's surely better to use android without the ties of a google account.

For a time, my screen was going blank whenever I tried to check my voicemail. Internet searches revealed that it likely had to do with the proximity sensor being misaligned. The fix? To simply remove the battery, wait 15 minutes, and then put it back in. Poof! It was fine afterword. Kinda like how turning off a computer and then turning it back on can clear the cobwebs and bring it working fine again, that the same applies to smart phones, and to truly turn off a smart phone requires actually removing the battery.

I just happened to notice this. I think I'm going to try this out. Or perhaps look for a Canadian paid email that's similarly decent.
