Phone recommendations?
 

Well, I need a new phone(well want).


I can wait for some time but I was hoping to get some inspiration here as I've done some looking and I'm now thoroughly discouraged.



Situation:
I have an LG G4 that, for the second time, has a dead accelerometer and no longer flips (first time the board was replaced under warranty). For a smart phone, this is a killer... (for me)


Hopes:
I would like a phone I have control over with no bloatware or tracking! I would like one that had at least busybox but I would prefer one that had native linux commands as well and pretty decent specs; I plan on keeping it a long time.


Unsuccessful:
I had high hopes for Ubuntu One but it's pretty much dead (please, I don't want to argue but it's not viable for me).

Sailfish would be nice but I don't see phones that are decent (spec wise). I did look at getting a turing phone but those apparently had many issues and aren't even sold anymore until the new one...which will be very expensive and android. Plus they weren't rootable (I believe).

I'm not really comfortable with CyanogenMod now; as they seem to have sold out, by throwing in with Microsoft (see wiki).


Lastly:
So, I'm kinda depressed and confused. I guess a rooted samsung might be the best option but I'm kinda sick of andriod (as it's taken more and more control and doesn't give the user the options it used too (imho)).

Being realistic, what you want is not out there really, certainly as regards tracking. Apple is as bad as Android & m$ windows phones. I just bought an S7 Edge, and was offered gigabytes of agreements to read if I wanted to lose a week. You have no hint of your desired price point, build quality, OS, screen size, storage, must-have features, etc. Come on.

Well, I thought I did. Software first, hardware second but I prefer 5.5 in or better screen. I would like the best specs I can get but they are secondary to OS freedom. I want build quality to be very, very good but I don't know where to research reliability. Like I said, I will likely keep the phone for a long time.

I would prefer better specs than my G4.

I was just looking at the Asus ZenFone AR. The virtual reality stuff looks kinda cool but frankly, I don't know that I would really use it. As far as price. It just depends on what I would get. I hate to buy a locked high end phone like iphone 7 or 8 or Samsung S8. I was really hoping to get something with an alternative OS like sailfish but those don't seem to even match my G4 in specs. The control over the OS would be my highest priority. The ability to remove apps/bloatware and preferably not upload all my habits to google or apple.

I would like a large battery... preferably replaceable, but that's few and far right now. least 128G if no sd.... if sd I could live with less.

I hope that's somewhat more clear.


If I hadn't read about people having real reliability problems, I'd look at getting an old model Turing phone with Sailfish OS. Like Their Dark Wyvern model.

If anybody has had one of these did they ever fix the issues? I have read about overheating and software issues as well as it just cutting out.

I opted for a Samsung S7 edge myself, as I needed to update the OS and don't often swap phones.

Aliexpress has some very cheap options, but quality can be suspect. You pay your money, you take your choice, Decide how much you want to spend, and get your best phone for that.

Every smartphone I've had has been an HTC and I've been happy with each.

Right now I have an HTC One M7 that's going fine almost three years in.

I had an HTC a very long time ago. It had windows and I hated it... but more because of the windows OS than the phone.

That would likely be the HTC Excalibre with Windows CE (I use T-Mobile and have since it was Voicestream; T-Mobile marketed it as the T-Mobile Dash). Was it very thin with a keyboard under the display and shaped sort of like a potato?

It was before iPhone and Android and was my first HTC; the only alternative was a Blackberry, and I wasn't interested in one of them. I felt that it did what it did quite nicely, but Windows CE was full of memory leaks; I had to reboot it every two or three days.

I think, I had problems with it freezing up on me. Regardless, it had an accident (the on purpose kind).

Heh. I don't think it ever froze on me, but that might have been because of the regular reboots.

Once the G-1 came out, I got one and have stuck with Android ever since. I can't say I'm an Android loyalist--I'm well aware of the criticisms and failings of Android as compared to something that is truly FLOSS--but it's like voting. You have to vote in the real world, and I'd vote for Android over iJunk any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

well I'm unsure @ this point androids gotten worse and worse.... at this point I would like to try a third option...like sailfish... unfortunately there doesn't appear to be much out there

As far as I can see it's Android or noting (Apple aside) and either a shiny slab of glass or a shiny slab or glass. I gave up in the end and bought a Blackberry Priv so I at least have a physical keyboard. I'm fairly happy with it with the only annoyances being Android related apart from the odd freeze which I can live with as a trade off for having a keyboard. As to my next device (hopefully not for 5 years or so) I'm looking into a dumb phone with 4G hotspot and something like the Open Pandora or one of the tiny laptops which seem to be popping up from time to time.

The only thing out there appears to be LineageOS.

Oh ok, this must be the fork of Cyanogenmod that I heard about. It's definitively worth a look!

As far as I see, from a quick glance, they don't support anything that new but perhaps I can get a new/er phone and flash it when the image is ready.
