Motorola ROKR E6
Hi,
I have got the Motorola ROKR E6, which they claim it to be Linux based. How can I know weather I can install some applications which are linux based or so? Regards RK Veluvali |
The phone uses a Linux-based operating system, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it functions like a desktop computer. There are still limits in place due to hardware constraints and occasionally wireless provider regulations.
What exactly where you looking to do? |

I'm more enthusiastic in exploring the capabilities of my phone and want to make the best use of it. Though I'm a green horn in this arena I would like to explore the phones capabilities. I'm a Linux user. Could you please help me..? Regards RK Veluvali |
Whether you can install linux app depends on the firmware version of your phone. Earlier firmwares allowed the installation of the native apps. but they have blocked it in the newer firmware version.
You can get lot of info about this in motorolafans.com. there is a seperate forum for E6 where you ll get all the info about it |

But, once we hack and get hold of its root fs, there should be way to do it. Also, embedded systems have root filesystems as read-only. So, before making any changes to boot order, it has to be changed into RW file system. So, lot of painful hacks have to be done to boot into console. One more easy way would be to install a virtual console and run your shell scripts inside it. |
If there was like an interphone firmware project like Rockbox for mp3 players, it would be drop dead awesome. I'll be first to buy a phone just for that.

I own a Motorola A780. Since it's got a Linux OS in it - unfortunately - I am not able to download any softwares for it. The only things that work are the Java based apps - and IMHO - they're no where as feature laden as the ones available for phone that run on a Windows CE or Symbian OS.
