Is my phone ready for Froyo?
I bought my Milestone from ebay and had to ship to Australia and have it flown to Bangladesh (where I live) for legal reasons. It came with a firmware that had Chinese in it. The model number was XT702 and the reception it had was plainly shocking. It would go out of service on my office desk which is pretty much at the centre of Dhaka. Even the cheapest of all mobiles had 5 bars there. It ate up all the charge in hours.
I was properly disappointed with the thing. Anyway after a couple of days I found a forum and rooted my mobile with this guide. http://androidforums.com/all-things...root-guide.html I was able to root and changed the firmware of my phone with what I believe is a UK firmware. It solved the reception issue and the consuming battery charge issues. After the root and consequent firmware change, my phone currently has these details: Firmware Version 2.1-update1 Firmware configuration version GAS_EMEA_USASHLSOORTGB_PO23 Baseband Version 3GSMEPU91A_U_91.07.4EI Baseband configuration version UCASHLSMR2EMEAB1B805C.OR Kernel version 2.6.29-omP1 A21146@CA25RHE74 #1 Build number SHOLS_U2_02.31.0 My bootloader is 90.78 However, whenever I try to update, it says: "The device is unable to connect to the server. Try again later." I know there isn't any update available (I could be wrong) but shouldn't it be able to connect to the update server at least? Or is it not going to since I have rooted my phone? I read somewhere that once you update a rooted milestone you lose the root, which I am fine with by the way. I just want to have my phone ready for Froyo (Android 2.2) whenever Motorola decides to finally release it. And then may be move on to something fancy. Any suggestions? |
Not sure what the question is here exactly. Froyo is not available for the Milestone, and last time I heard there was no release date for it (and in fact, I have heard the Milestone may not get it at all). Since there is no update, obviously none will be listed on your phone.
However, when and if an update does become available, it would cause you to lose root. So you wouldn't want to update your phone even if it prompts you to, you would need to wait for a rooted version of Froyo for the Milestone and upgrade to that instead. Even if you are not actively using any root features, you shouldn't just let the ability get removed as you may later find it was more useful than you thought. |
I think depending upon what you've installed after rooting, the official update might fail if you try to install. I've got ClockworkRecovery on my Droid, and supposedly that does block the updates. You also might check with the author of your ROM. I'm running BuglessBeast and there was a patch issued that stops the notification.

The Milestone is the GSM version of the Verizon Droid (CDMA), it is totally different hardware and runs different software. None of the Droid firmware's (like Bugless) work on a Milestone.
If you are running a different bootloader like ClockWork or SPRecovery, they will stop the update.zip from actually flashing to the hardware but don't stop Android itself from checking for and downloading updates. It could be that something he has installed is keeping OTA from connecting, but again, as there is no Froyo update for the Milestone yet there is nothing for it to download anyway. Though now that I am reading his post again, the most likely problem is simply that he has flashed a firmware from a different country, so it is trying to update against the wrong servers. |
Well I followed that guide precisely. And the SBF file I used can be found here: http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone
I used the 2.1 non-service UK file Quote:
Their basebands are different, one being CDMA and the other GSM. I'm told apart from this their hardware is identical. The reason most Droid custom roms don't work on Milestone is because the milestone bootloader is locked, unlike Droid, by motorola. Making it almost impossible to load firmwares that are not motorola assigned. Anyway I have found that some milestone users will get the Froyo update as soon as the end of the year while some wont get it at all. https://supportforums.motorola.com/c...ftwareupgrades So do I just wait till the UK people to start getting it and decide then what to do? |
