ps-auxm, welcome to the forums and a happy new year.
i am not clayrevoyant; a little more information is necessary to even make a guess as to the nature of your problem.
- which phone (you can post a link to the model on gsmarena.com)?
- did you install anything?
- are you doing something when the freezes happen, like watching videos or...?
i take it the phone came pre-installed with android 5.1.1 from the factory?
also phone manufacturers tend to have their own bloatware installed.
you can go into settings => security => autostart management (this is from a kitkat phone, might be slightly different on yours) and disable some useless sh*t.
also, google's very own native bloatware can bog performance & bandwidth down significantly.
i don't use a google account at all, and amongst many other alternative apps, i also use this.
ps:
there's also tons of system monitoring apps out there, so you're not reduced to guessing, you can actually see what's eating your resources.
android even has one built in, accessible via developer options => show cpu usage.
(to enable dev options, go into about phone and tap build number 7 times)
As Ondoho said, not nearly enough information. From what little you provided, it sounds to me like an app running the the background, hogging the CPU. I have no idea what you might be running. It might be something else, but it's not possible to say without knowing a lot more about your device and what is installed on it.
Android 5.1.1 was pre-installed.
8GB internal storage and 1GB system Ram.
The bloatware apps from Virgin mobile and google android is taking 6GB of the internal storage. 1.9GB is free space.
Quote:
Storage Info
Apps 1.64GB
Miscellaneous 4.43GB
Free Space 1.9GB
RAM Usage
System 314MB
Apps 227MB
Free 343MB
Also, when I watch videos in fullscreen, it will sometimes turn the phone off ( not shutdown ).
I had low budget phones before and I never had these kinds of issues. I think the phone I have is a malfunction and I should exchange it for something else. I have twenty-five days left to return items for credit or exchanges.
The phone is probably set to kill the display after a period of inactivity. That's the norm, but it's easily configurable. The display is the biggest user of battery power, so it's usual to have it stopped after a set time of inactivity. Touch the screen occasionally and you will reset the timer. The phone should be capable of running Android fine, but you have to be somewhat judicious about what apps you install and have running. Some can use a lot of CPU time in the background. Again, it's not possible to say without knowing what you have installed. Exchanging it is your decision, it's up to your judgement.

Yes, I am aware of this. I've been using android for years since version 2.1. I know the settings and configurations that will affect the phone.
The phone turns off while watching a video in full screen in mX PLayer and youtube. My previous android phones didn't do this while I watched a video. And in other apps, I have short freezes or delays in response.
Also, when I go back to the home screen and touch an icon, it doesn't response quickly. After a few seconds of delay, it then responds.
Since the phone is still new, I only installed about 11 apps. I don't side load apps outside the google play store.
I appreciate the help and suggestions but this phone is not working normally. I will return it for credit or exchange. I suspect it's bad memory or a section of it.
looks like an unfortunate combination of a big screen and not enough ram/storage.
and 6GB is a lot even for a recent android version. i guess the virgin bloatware is really bloated, and heavy on resources...

i think you're right to return it.
Yeah. I had phones with 1GB of ram and the screen was 4.3", and I didn't have those issues.
You might be correct as well, the 5.7" display, the bloatware and the android lollipop OS are too much for a 1GB phone.
I mean, memory is cheap. Today's phone running lollipop, marshmallow, the bloatware and a screen bigger than 5.0" needs a minimum of 2GB.
Anyway, I learn from this experience not to get a phone with 1GB of ram unless the specs justifies it.
You've 8 GB and the system hogs over 6GB! That ratio is all wrong. If you're later than Android 4.4.2, it isn't straightforward to use an SDCard as storage. I have 2 android devices, one with 16G storage & 16G SDCard, and a tablet with 32G storage. That's more the size.
