How Do You Install Web Browser on Mobile Internet Device Running Ubuntu Linux 2.6.29
Greetings all your Linux Mobile Experts:
I am a Linux noob and really don't know anything about tablet PCs. I recently purchased a Cisco Home Energy Management System. This runs Ubuntu Linux 2.6.29 for Mobile Internet Device (MID). Here are the complete specs: http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/pd..._603194_v2.pdf While not the original intention, I would like to be able to install a web browser on this device. How would I go about doing this? My desktop is Windows based, in case that is important. Also, there doesn't seem to be a power button? How do I shut down? Thanks for all your help! I look forward to learning more about Linux. |
Is there any official provision for connecting to this device and installing software? Are you able to get shell access to it currently?
The PDF only seems to mention HTTP/HTTPS as interface protocols, so I am guessing you are limited to just a web-interface for configuration. See if there are any options to enable Telnet or SSH, which would at least be a start. From there you can look into adding software and making modifications, though there is no telling what steps may have been taken to prevent modification of the device's software. |
I think I may need to find a local shop/tech to take this device to. I have no idea how to do any of your suggestions. I am a total noob.

NOTE: This is more of a rant than a question.
I e-mailed and called Cisco to see if they could do a little hand holding. I thought that they would be able to give me detailed instructions on the usage of their device. I emailed them a few questions. The reply was the link to the device page on Cisco.com. I then decided calling might be a better option. I really don't think they know that they made this device. The second question the Technical Support Rep asked me was, "Is that a Cisco device?" Not a good sign. The freeze frame of the video on their website shows the device with many, many applications: http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/products/hem.html I believe that this device should be able to connect to the Android Marketplace. The only issue is I do not know how to access it and neither does Cisco. This device would be so much more valuable to me, if I could access the Android Marketplace. I would then be able to easily download a web browser. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. |
