GSM Modem for Linux system

Hi,

I need to buy a GSM Modem supports Linux (say Centos), anyone who will just kindly tell me where I could get it?

I have got a contact of a seller from UK, but he said his Wavecom M1206B GSM modem does not need driver for running on any platform. I cannot believe that. Any device needs a driver.

Thank you.

He probably means that his device will use a standard driver that comes with any operating system. Did you bother to look it up at the manufacturer's web site?

You would be better off searching Google for "GSM modem on Linux". That would yield the following URL among others.

Hi,

take a look at tuxmobile, there are various hardware proposals and installation descriptions for mobile devices on Linux.

I bought the same modem from the website and it works fine on Debian.

The site is correct in that no driver is required.

The modem came with a PDF manual with the AT command set. The modem uses RS-232 and standard GSM AT command set.

This means it works with lots of software as this is an industry standard.

To use it, you just send AT commands over the serial port e.g. ATDT 1234234 to dial a number. You can do this with minicom.

I'm writing my own program since I want to integrate with SMS software. But I'm guessing it will work with lots of other software that is GSM AT compatible.

Hi there Imews.

Just wondering, how did this modem work with SMS?

I am looking at a similar requirement to use SMS via Linux via a modem.

Any feedback on how your job went, and the ability of the modem to transmit SMS would be appreciated.

Regards,

Ian Macintosh

Hi Kirukan.

I don't have an issue, just asking for feedback on that particular modem when used for SMS.

Imews should be subscribed to the thread and may choose to reply to my query at some time.

The reason for not opening a new thread is that it is relevant to the discussion of the modem in the original question by sunnyyang.

Thanks for the Kannel link. However, this particular query of mine related to the particular modem under discussion, not SMS in general.

Regards,

Ian.

SMS - Wavecom M1206B GSM modem

Hi.

Just an update on this modem. I bought one and am using it successfully to send SMS messages.

Reason for me writing this here is because this thread came up high on the Google search list for my keywords and somebody else might find this info useful.

Regards,

Ian.

GSM Modem / Pager

I couldn't say about sending to a pager. I've only used it to send SMS messages.

I installed Kannel which does the job perfectly for me.

Regards,

Ian.
