g1 mounting issue

Hi,
This may not be the place to ask so forgive me if im out of line.
Im running Gentoo 2008. I have been able to mount my Android G1 like a normal thumb drive but after a recent update (i have rc30 now) it dose not want to work.

After I plug the phone into the computer a notification pops up giving me the option to mount the SDcard so I can use it with my computer, I click mount and expect it to work. Fdisk can not see the device, and there is no sda1 to mount. I can mount sda using usbfs but this dose not give me access to my data and dose me no good.

Again, sorry if this is the wrong place, im sure if i walk into the T-mobile store though, they will just tell me to use windows or mac.

And I have no idea what to do with that. There are a few keyboard errors in there but mostly thats usb-storage.

What happens after this line?
Usually a device will be allocated a node in /dev after the device has settled.
Can you compare your Gentoo dmesg output with your slack dmesg output?
Perhaps your kernel config for Gentoo was altered during the recent update, thereby removing support for your device?

But i dont know if that points to a cause or not.

edit:
I cant compare the dmesg to Slackware because my laptop is dead (bad power supply) and thats the only other computer I have now. Also the update was to the phone software, not the Gentoo box. I posted this question on the mobile board because I suspect that the change in the phone software may have altered the way that its read preventing it from being mountable.

I understand now, it seems that the phone software is causing problems. I have only one more suggestion, try mounting it in a live CD environment, GParted's live CD is small and should be adequate for testing this theory.

I have the same problem. I've worked around it by unplugging the phone, immediately plugging it back in, selecting to mount, then I can see /dev/sdb1 and mount it but not until I've done all that. Would be nice to have a real fix (kinda embarrassing to show my coworkers linux and G1 being buggy), but this works for me for now.

I too have the G1 with android. When I connect it to my KUbuntu (8.04) box via USB, and immediately choose the "mount" option on the phone, the following appears in dmesg:

Whereas, in my case, I have the phone (G1+android) set so that the memory card is left mounted and a quick look at the settings tells me that it's recognised the memory card as available - but I can't find any way of setting the phone so that it knows to act as a "USB storage device" i.e. the drop down on the settings menu is missing.

If I do dmesg I can see that my system (Kubuntu - 8.04 I think it is) can see the device - i.e. I seem to get the same indications that it's listed as "sdc", but I have no idea what else to look for i.e. whether it's in a specific group and who needs to have access to that group so I can use it to store data (music etc) ?

I'm wondering, if I set up my system for a graphical root desktop, whether it would show a mounted USB device ? Like I get for my digital camera (obviously I've got my system set up so that my user account is setup so that it automounts the camera. Hence I'm wondering if my G1 does just appear like that.

Sorry if thats all a bit vague, but I'm really not any kind of expert, just a keen and frequent user, who doesn't know or understand any of the technicalities (other than what I can find here)

p.s. Oh and I'm not so sure whether it's peoples systems of whether some items have been left out (deliberately/intentionally or just over looked). Because the text messaging/sms facility on my phone seems to indicate that it can receive and send, but there doesn't seem to be any facility to forward messages or to store them individually - in other words, is there something like an upgrade that I haven't got, or some specific packages that I'd need to install. Are they "standard" or extra things ?

Yes, I know of gnomad2, it's what we use to move music to my partners Creative Zen mp3 player - I can only presume that I must have the mtp libs installed as well.....

I currently have no idea about how I'd see what root see's on /dev/sdc (I don't have any graphical login set for root). I don't know what the commands might be.

Yes, I have my user set so it's part of the disk group which should (in theory) allow me to read/write, but on the off chance I opened a terminal and just cd'd to the directory that I have my ogg's in and did cp ~/Data/Oggs/AC-DC /dev/sdc and it said that it was omitting the respective directory with the AC-DC songs in it.

So I then tried the same thing but specifying an album, but then it just told me that /dev/sdc wasn't a directory.

Fine.

but after doing su I then tried to do ls -l to see what it can see in the G1 only to find that as far as I understand it see's the device but that's it. I can't work out how to make the device let me read the disc.

Hence I'm completely stumped!

If you add a formatted disk to a system it will appear as /dev/sdc or /dev/sdd etc...
If you partition that disk, each patition will be mountable and will be given a name like /dev/sdc1 or /dev/sdc2 or /dev/sdd1 etc...
The disk is seen as being an unpartitioned disk. To stream to such a device you have to know what the phone will think of this, you could ruin your phone.
Also, try cat /proc/bus/usb/devices, it should appear there somewhere.

You won't see anything different. Use the sudo ls -l command in a terminal to check this.

Even if you could copy stuff you would need the -R switch (see man cp)

What you're describing (except for dmesg as I haven't checked) is exactly the symptom the rest of us are having. We got around it by unplugging, replugging, and THEN trying to mount it.

As to the part about setting your phone up to do USB Storage, and not having that menu option, I can't help .

menu --> settings --> SD Card & Phone Storage is where I would think to look, but I see no option for act as USB Storage. I went through most of the menus (avoiding the obviously-not-it ones) and can't find it. I'm assuming then that this is a "feature" of the RC30 patch, and you decide to mount upon connecting it.

If you were not aware, when you plug it in, it pops up the USB icon in the notification area. Slide that down, and you'll have "USB Connected". Touch that, and it will ask you if you want to mount. Choose yes. If you then don't have "sda1" or "sdb1" or similar show up in /dev, and it should be less than 5 seconds, unplug it and plug it back in, and go through the slider process again. Let us know if that works.

It's a juryrig, I know, but it's a minimal nuisance (at least for me) and works.

Not sure if this will help you but, I also have a G1 with RC30, i'm running ubuntu 8.10 and i have no problems mounting the sdcard using my phone and its supplied USB cable

afterwards its already mounted and i have a 4.0 GB media shown in places in Gnome and also an icon on my desktop, though i think the automounting is prob. something they have done in ubuntu as any flash card i connect automounts (i also have a usb cardreader drive)

Ok, so as far as mounting the SD card, it seems that the latest OTA update removed the option from the SD card menu to "mount" it.

What "they" did, was to change it so that when you plug the phone in, you get a notification (menu/notifications) that "USB connected", you then select that notification and it opens a window "USB Connected" with the options of "mount" or "Don't mount".

So if I select mount, the USB symbol from the notifications area disappears and I get a dolphin window opening showing it to me as sdc1.

When I then right click the dolphin window, and look at the properties, it seems that it's showing it as part of /media/disk, but it's "owned" by root and I'm it's user.

If I then try to change the permissions it's showing it as "read only", so I'm guessing that I'd have to reformat the card so it's read/write.

I don't know how I'd do that.

Also, if I check the settings/SD card & phone storage, it is showing that it can see the SD card, but the camera application, when opened keeps telling me to insert an SD card before trying to use the application.

So I'm thinking that it's probably that the card needs to be read/write for the camera, as it can't see "read only" i.e. it needs to write to the card..... (which might be why I can see a DCIM folder on the card???).

I don't have a card reader for micro SD cards so I'm wondering it there's a way of formatting the SD card while it's still in the phone or whether I can achieve this without root access (it seems that the latest OTA update also prevents any root access)?

Any ideas/suggestions/guidance etc would be gratefully received.
