ARM linux 2.6.30.4 booting optimization

Hi,

I am using ARM linux 2.6.30.4 on samsung s3c2440 development platform. The boot loader I am using

is u-boot and the file system is yaffs2 on a 64 MB nand. Once the board boots up, a GUI application

is loaded together with the kernel (with the help of startup script in /etc/init.d/rcS).

I need to optimize the booting time of the board plus the starting of the application.

I thought of putting up cramfs filesystem and initrd filesystem onto the board.

The purpose of cramfs is that the file system is small compared to yaffs2 so that the application

can be loaded up faster. and then later on mount the yaffs2.

Or is it possible that I can load a ramdisk by the bootloader (initrd) and initially run my

application from the ramdisk. The application can be faster since it is running from initrd.

I am reallly confused with the usage of cramfs and initrd file systems. Which is the best technique

I can use to reduce boot up time ... using cramfs or using initrd or both.
Please help me with suggestions.

thanks

I'd first look what really takes time during boot. For instance, start from the boot log. What takes most time?

[ 11.715000] eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1

Please press Enter to activate this console.

Mounting the yaffs2 file system takes 3 secs. Will it help if I mount the cramfs initially instead of yaffs2

thanks
