Android Data Bridge won't span gap between my phone and pc
I'm trying to link my T-Mobile MyTouch running Droid 1.6 (after an unsuccessful update attempt to Froyo, I really wanted it to work) to my pc running Vector, and nothing yet has worked. I wanted Kubuntu but can't seem to get a working ISO though the MD5 sum checks out. Now I have the Droid SDK kit which also has Droid 1.6 at the ready. I'm trying Jads Internet Sharer at the moment. However, with debug mode active on the MyTiuch, running +adb forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080+ just gives me a no permissions error, even as root. How do I find and fix the culprit?
That is exactly what I am trying to do, but to no avail. I have also typed +./adb --help+ and tried every option I could find (including +./adb -usb+ and variants), but I keep getting insufficient permissions errors (even as root).
How do I find out what device the phone is set up as under Linux? The only clue it gives me thus far is "HTC Android Phone", but no device file is shown anywhere.

My phone (T-Mobile MyTouch 3G by HTC) is still using the factory Droid 1.6 kernel (not rooted) after a failed update to Froyo 2.3. I was trying adb under a full superuser (root) KDE interface.
There's a daemon, adbd, that has to be run on the phone, and that needs root, IIRC, because it can write and remount and all that stuff. On the phone, you never get past being a luser without rooting it. Forget using adb.
rooting is in 2 stages. There's a bootup type stage and the main mod/kernel. If you boot the phone with the camera button pressed, or home & back(?) you get ionto that - even as the phone is.
Rooting involves
1. Replacing ther bootup type stage with something more powerful. As long as this goes OK, you will find it difficult to brick the phone.
2. Adding a mod, which needs google apps & the mod over each other.
off with you to xda-developers.com with a very specific search linked to your phone type, and find out how easy it is(or Not).
