X Forwarding problem with Linux Mint machine as remote host

Howdy all,
I am trying to set it up so I can remotely log in to my office machine with X forwarding. My home computer is a mac and the office machine runs Linux Mint. I manage my own machine, but the only way I can access it is to first log in to one of the department servers. I talked to the sysadmin and they set it up for me so I should be able to forward through the server. When I try to open any X application I get the "can't open display" error and an "echo $DISPLAY" only returns a blank line. That seems incorrect, but I haven't seen anything to remedy this. Any help would be appreciated!

Have you installed xauth?

xauth is installed, but I'm not sure what to do with it.

I am still having issues with this. I have google'd and can't find anything to remedy. From what I've seen all my ssh stuff is configured properly on the host machine, but I still get "Error: Can't open display: " when I try to open any application that uses X. Any help would be appreciated.
