What's The Name of the Message That Pops Up?

I have LinuxMint 10-amd64/Gnome. Whenever I plug in a network cable, disconnect the wifi, or a message comes in via Pidgin and the Pidgin window is not the current one, a black notifier type message pops up with that info in the upper right hand quadrant of the screen. What is the name of that so I can look up how to turn if off or change the amount of time it displays. Thanks.

In the Gnome Panel menu, it's called "Notification Area". FWIW, I find it useful to know if a device has been detected and properly identified... but that's just me.

Well, after searching for this, it doesn't seem like there is anyway to modify it. All I want is to reduce the display time of the notifications to maybe 2 seconds.

Neither
Code:
gnome-panel --help-all
man gnome-panel
show any useful info. I also looked very carefully in the control center and under the Admin and Preferences folders. Am I missing an app that was supposed to be installed that gives control of this? Thanks for your help.
