Thanks, I have no idea what Mate is? How do I know? All I know is I have Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit
Having said that, it's only VLC I want maximised, but from what I can see in the link that will start everything maximised, which I don't want.
I assume it means I can't get VLC to open maximised then.

It is your desktop so it is up to you to find out what you have installed. The Mint site and Google are your friends.

Devil's Pie can be configured to detect windows as they are created, and match the window to a set of rules. If the window matches the rules, it can perform a series of actions on that window. For example, I can make all windows created by X-Chat appear on all workspaces, and the main Gkrellm1 window does not appear in the pager or task list.

Thanks for replying again.
I am really not technical at all. I can read it, but I can't follow what any of it means.
Same as Cinnamon, I just thought that's what I had?
Googling seems to say Cinnamon is new code, then mentions Gnome as well, whatever that is? That is all way beyond my understanding.
I think I'll just leave it as it is. Thanks for your help anyway.

Yes, Cinnamon is the desktop environment you have. Mate is the other one. My problem is that there are that may names in Mint that I don't know anymore if Cinnamon stands for a desktop environment or whatever.
Anyway, if you installed Cinnamon, Cinnamon is your desktop environment.
It seems that Devil's Pie also works on Cinnamon. But I can't give you a step-by step instruction as I don't have a Mint machine at hand.
