Unable to change desktop background image

Hello, recently, I upgraded my linux desktop to linuxmint 18.2 with cinnamon. Right after the upgrade, when I set the background image, the background changed immediately to the selected image.

However, after installing a few applications and updating a few other packages, the background image setting doesn't seem to work anymore AFTER logging in. The login screen displays the correct background image but once I login, the background turns grey.

The output of

Code:

gsettings get org.cinnamon.desktop.background picture-uri
shows that the right background image is selected. In fact, if I change the image, the correct file is listed as the output of this command.

I did a search on this issue and tried some of the solutions proposed. None of them seem to help my situation. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have Mint-18.1 in a VM here and was able to change the background image as follows
1. Get the 'grey' up.
2. Right click the mouse and select 'Change background image.'
3. Do things in the subsequent menus and double click on the picture of my (limited)choice.

Unfortunately, that didn't work for me. That was the first thing I tried to change the background image.

You should investigate why, which is your problem. Explain 'that didn't work' and let us in on your issues if you want us to fix them.
