Unhappy Thunderbird setting in Mint11

I have finished building my pc and installed Mint11.
I have tried to configure thunderbird but some of the boxes are already completed with google mail and an imap mail server. I cannot change these settings but use a pop server. Any help greatly appreciated as I want to get thing working so I do not have to install windows. I have posted a question to thunderbird support but can only send it if I have an email address which I do not have as I cannot configure tbird to work

If you are still interested in Thunderbird -

The problem is rather easy to solve actually. After it detects the server, usually, there will be a small link next to the server settings - "Start Over". If you click that, Thunderbird will allow you to setup the servers manually.

I have tried that but the server detection automatically states the server type is IMAP Mail Server But I have a pop server so when I change the server name I get an error message which says this is not an IMAP server. I have tried the start over link but still the same results.
