Red bar when booting!

I'm unable to boot past this screen (see pic). Has anyone encountered this before? It's first a red vertical bar, slightly wider than in the pic, then changes to what you see - looks like a sand timer, with the 'c' copyright sign in the middle.

I didn't do anything to my Linux Mint 18 install, other than updates.

Once in a while, the PC gets past this stage and I'm able to log in and use the PC as normal but it's extremely slow to get to the login screen and even past it. Once I can start using the PC, the speed is normal.

I thought I would get rid of the current Mint and make a new installation but the new one froze as well. I tried Deepin with the same effect. I tried Manjaro XFCE on a bootable USB and it worked fine, so it seems to be Debian/Ubuntu related.

I have Ubuntu Mate also installed on this PC and I can boot into it most of the time but it's slower than usual to boot. Once booted, the speed is normal.
Any idea what's going on?

What would you like to know?

I started up the PC using Majaro XFCE on a bootable USB and deleted all the partitions containing all linux OS, so I was left with a Win XP partition and a data partition. I then installed Majaro on a new logical partition so I won't have to use a bootable USB stick every time.

I then tried to install Linux Mint on another logical partition but encountered the red bar again. I tried installing Deepin and had the following messages:
No caching mode page found
Tainted: Gtask kworker /1:2:193 blocked for morethan 120 seconds
echo 0> /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_sec disables this message

More along those lines would save people running around in circles. If it was an old XP machine the video card is likely having issues with KMS. But it's all guesswork.

First of all stop changing things - I'm (for one) still not sure what you have where. Boot an on-disk system and use the "arrow" keys to stop the countdown on the boot menu. Hit "E" to edit the menu, go down to the kernel line and erase the "quiet splash", then hit F10 to boot.
If the screen stops issuing messages, take a (decent) picture and post it so we can read it.

Exact version of distros, which you have tried to install.

I tried to install Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Deepin 15.5 Beta and 15.2, all failed. Only Deepin gave the error message I wrote earlier.
Mint stalled with this red bar.
Manjaro XFCE 17.0.6 installed fine. It's running on kernel 4.9.65-1.
I have some PC specs below. The machine is definitely not "an old W XP machine". I just installed XP on it years back and forgot about it!
I use Mint day to day and would really like to have it back and running.

I tried to press 'e' at the boot menu but there was no quiet splash being displayed.

Can you check other distros like Opensuse or Centos?

Or the live Media of Gentoo?

Can I try Salix instead? Opensuse and Centos have massive ISO files.

Check out http://distrowatch.com/ for matching distros.

I havenīt tried Salix until now.

I tried to install Salix. I must have messed up because it wouldn't boot after. Salix uses LILO instead of GRUB. I was getting the error message .../normal.hd file not found.

I then installed Fedora and Solus on different partitions and they worked fine. I did see the red bar appearing for both but the install progressed past. However, I was unable to boot up both - I was still getting the same GRUB error message, file not found.

I went into BIOS and changed the order of the setup and was then able to get the usual GRUB screen to choose my OS and everything worked from then on.

I found out that the PC boots successfully from the SATA option in the BIOS. One of the other boot options must be corrupted and causing this boot error. One boot option is Ubuntu which is weird as there's no Ubuntu derivative OS on the system.

Since the two OSes worked, I then successfully managed to install Linux Mint. It's working fine so far, there's no red bar anymore. It appeared briefly when starting the other OSes (Solus & Fedora) the first time but the bootup process didn't stay stuck on it. I haven't started these OS multiple times to see if the red bar still appears.
