Print Driver HP Laserjet 1020

Using Linux Mint - I have loaded HP's Driver for this printer and to some extent it worked. Would only print one page and since has ceased to function. Tried re-loading per HP without success. I can print via my HP 3055A without difficulty but it is an inkjet which lacks the economy of my HP1020 (Black/white). Any suggestions?

Hi Wellington912, Welcome to LQ. Have you tried setting up the printer from the hp setup utility?

Good luck. ;-)

Hp Printer

Hi Peacedog,

Thank you for your response. Yes I have tried loading the driver through the HP setup options. It did work at one point but has failed to activate since. Have tried re-loading through HP setup but just does not engage again. As mentioned my other HP printer 3055A continues to work fine but I can't support the costs of that ink jet as I do a massive amount of black/white printing. I have been looking at the possibility of examining the HP printer driver with the view to writing a separate new version through Linux but I am a long way off being able to achieve that.
I have changed the USB ports to see if that made any difference but there is no evidence that it does. The conclusion I am at now, is that there must be some suttle hardware factor between the HP 3055A and the HP 1020 - No surprise there! What I haven't checked is whether the HP3055A will print multiple pages!

hp 1020 laserjet Printing.

Hi Peacedog,

I have addressed the download via a redirection from HP. Looks much the same as before but it now works and prints multi pages. Have rebooted and printed again and still works. Thanks for your contribution.

Glad you got it sorted.

Good luck. ;-)

HP1020 Laserjet Linux driver

Hi Peacedog,

Well, I did have it sorted but its failed again. It seems to get corrupted in some way if you halt the printer by removing the paper (If you discover that it is going to be a massive print job of stuff you don't want). The printer doesn't ask for retry as it does in Windows and when you reset for another job it will no longer print. In Windows I would expect to cancel all waiting print jobs but there is no obvious facility or need to do this with Linux. I have been going through the process of disconnecting the USB port and rebooting from scratch but so far have not been able to reload the driver and print. I have tried uninstalling the driver before reloading to no avail.

Have you tried the cups admin inteface?

Good luck. ;-)

HP1020 Laserjet Linux driver

Hi Peacedog,

Thank you for your response. My problem with the HP1020 printer has been resolved. It isn't Linux that was causing the failure to print. It is an issue that occurs within XP's spooling service. It has occurred previously in XP but it had evaporated from my memory. Sometimes if you choose to halt printing by removing the paper (on print jobs that turn out to be massive!) it can upset the spooling service and it has to be restarted via control, administrative service, etc. It is not always that simple. I loaded Linux to my computer while xp was resident, setting up and specifying an appropriate partition. I suspect that Linux sert up in this way is linked to the printer services via XP???

Cheers.
Malcolm.
