You have two sound cards. What do you see if you open up Pavucontrol, and look at the mixer? Where is the sound being routed?

And what exactly were you fidgeting with? Remember, we can not see your system, or know what you have done so far. You need to help us, in order to help you.
camorri thanks for your reply.
i am very new to linux and i am not sure what or where pavucontrol is. can you point me there so i can tell what i see. i thought after installation i should update stuff so i dug around installing and updating. i cant remember what exactly changed things but at some point i decided to try audio and got no sound from vlc then i went online to youtube and there was no sound also. this all started after successfully installing mint. i got garbled sounds from audio and video files. thats when i thought of updating and installing plugins etc. as i said i am not sure what and when as i did not check after every installation of update or plugin
pavucontrol is the Pulse Audio volume control/sort of mixer. Most distros do not include it out-of-box, but it gives you more information about what Pulse is doing than standard Desktop Environment volume controls.
Klaatu recently did a podcast about trouble-shooting Linux audio. I cannot link directly to the podcast, but if you go here and look for episode 11X5, you may find it helpful.
Much of what I know about Linux I have learned from Klaatu's podcasts over the years.
Aus9, I welcome thoughtful comments from anyone wanting to help, so Thank-you for your thoughts.
Rastech, Sound in linux is not a simple thing to sort out. When I first respond to a thread, ( first responder ) I tend to be careful, as I'm not at all sure the OP's ( you ) knowledge of linux, or of the problem reported. I have a better idea now.
The podcast suggested by Frankbell is very good, and will give you some idea how to adjust pulse audio.
The big picture. To get sound you need working hardware, speakers, cables, and a capable sound card. ( you have two ).
Quote:
Creative Labs SB Audigy
driver: snd_emu10k1 port
This one looks like the main card, note the driver. The hardware needs a driver for it to function. So, this card is at least part way there. Card 3, as listed by your first post also shows 'audio'. Since it is USB, you might consider unplugging it until you sort out the sound problems you have. This simplifies the trouble shooting. Once you get sound working you can plug it back in and understand if it is causing any of your problems.
From the sound card, and driver, there is more software involved. Alsa is the next layer. It is present in most moden systems. To see if it is loaded, open a terminal, and type at the command prompt, 'lsmod | grep snd' ( type just what is between the single quotes ). You should get something like this if alsa is loaded.
You can post that output in this thread, be sure to use the QUOTE tags to keep the data easy to read.
Next is Pulse Audio. This is the next layer to deal with. Best bet here is to listen to the podcast and look at the various tabs in pavucontrol. Just a guess, I suspect you may have muted the sound in pavucontrol. Let us know if you can get pavucontrol ( sound mixer ) visible, and how you make out with it.
ones and ones at lq thanks for your help.
aus9, thanks for your suggestion. i followed your advice and had pavucontrol installed. sound card checked out. settings you suggested were already enabled.
frankbell, thank you too for your explanation and suggestion. will be heading over to Klaatu's as soon as i have finished posting here.
camorri, thanks again for helping out followed ur instructions and i hope to use the quote feature correctly. here goes ---
Alsa is there and running. I see you still have the usb audio plugged in. I do suggest you unplug it while you are getting sound working, unless that is your main sound card.
Where are your speakers connected? Is this a laptop or a desktop?
It appears card 3 is a web cam. Could you confirm that?
i dont have any usb sound devices plugged into the pc. the only usb sound related device is the usb mic built into the webcam. this is a desktop and my speakers are connected to the sb audigy sound card. give thanks again for your time and effort to sort i out. thanks
I would suggest OP now eliminates the nvidia ac97 sound device from being able to get sound now that we know OP connects to the sound blaster Creative labs thingee.
you can see that snd has a dependency of ....snd_ac97_codec, snd_intel8x0, snd_emu10k....and related files
More importantly ac97 appears to be used for both cards!
list should now be shorter and snd-intel8x0 should disapper
2) now run one or more of these commands until you see the audigy sound device
Code:
alsamixer -c0
alsamixer -c1
note that if Pulseaudio is running and you try that command without a card number....alsamixer by itself you will just see pulseaudio which is not helpful.
now take a screenshot of that terminal output....I suggest you upload it to imgur.com and then link to it
greetings all. got strange things to report.first is that in trying to get to root as aus9 suggested my computer locked up and when i restarted i was taken to a black screen asking me to manually fsck the drive.worked out how to do this and got back running but with loads of glitches. but the big surprise was that when i booted i just loaded some mp3s into rhythmbox and tried to play something. when i pressed play there was a pop! and the whole playlist ran down in two seconds. i replayed and there was a garbled sound for about thirty seconds getting clearer and clearer. my songs were playing! my songs are playing. so the noticeable problems now are not no sound but garbled sound at the beginning of playing from launch of player. plays for a few seconds and starts clearing up. some apps wont launch and my color has gone funny. do i post these problems somewhere else? can any one advise me on this? where to post i mean. thanks for all the kind support, help and good advise from all. ah pure good vibes here. give thanks
