Question No sound 17.3 x64

Hello all. I am having difficulty with getting sound to work. I am using a the on-board sound. I have two screen shots of my issue below. It appears my output is set to the microphone but I can seem to change it.

Thanks for the reply. Turns out the on-board sound wasn't working at all. So I disabled it and put in PCI sound card which does work. I tried that second link and when I applied those commands
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
it must have messed up my sound settings. I get no sound effects, and the test sound button when pressed doesn't do anything. However I am able to hear sound in youtube, and play the sound effects if I test them in the sound section.

Code:
~ $ lspci | grep -i audio
04:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8738/CMI8768 PCI Audio (rev 10)
