New install running very slow - network not working

Just installed Mint 17.3 Rosa x86_64

I have a 3ghz AMD Athlon quad-core and 12gb ram.

Yesterday the install was running fine. Today it is insanely slow, and the network is not working.

I ran a top command. There are two find commands taking insane amounts of system resources - like 90% of CPU and and 60% of memory. The find processes are are being ran as root, but I did not run the commands.

I install plexmediaserver, which likes static IP addresses, so I changed to a static IP. It was running fine yesterday, broken today.

I have my files on an external hdd. I cannot umount the ext hdd, even as root, I keep the message that it's busy.

Yesterday I was loving this install, today I'm hating it.

Any idea what could be going on?

I shutdown the system and unplugged the external drive.

When I rebooted, the find commands where not running. That helped.

The network problems were caused because the DNS settings were lost.

System seems to working, but I am not happy that this happened.

Will be interesting to see if this happens again.
