The Xfce flavour of Mint 18 has now been released as a beta if anyone would like to test it and provide feedback in the comments section of the page above.
As someone who is very probably going to be migrating from Mint 17.3 KDE to Mint 18 Xfce, I'll certainly be interested in testing it out.
I'll just add this post to take the thread off the "unanswered" pile.
I guess there must be something wrong with the LQ system at the moment though. This thread has registered 20,343 views and I only posted it yesterday. I can't believe there are that many Mint 18 Xfce beta testers out there...

20,343 does seem high, but Mint is very popular, consistently receiving the most visits
at the distrowatch site.
If Mint hasn't already surpassed ubuntu as the most widely used linux distro, I have no doubt
it will in the near future.

Interestingly enough, Mint themselves say "Linux Mint is the most popular desktop Linux distribution and the 3rd most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS." (https://www.linuxmint.com/about.php).

Thank you for the link.
That wouldn't surprise me, I know that back with ubuntu 12.04, which is when I started with linux, there was already a steady trend of ubuntu users, myself included switching to Mint.
A lot of that was attributed to the general dislike of the Unity DE.
