I'm transitioning from Ubuntu 10.04 to Mint 17.3. Things are going fairly well but a few stumbling blocks remain.
I have a few self-written bash scripts which are frequently used. (I think of them as personal utilities.) With Ubuntu it was a simple matter to create a custom launcher and place it (with appropriate icon) at the top of the screen.
Now, with Mint, I have those same launchers but they are clickable icons on the desktop. That's good, but not good enough. I tried to move those icons to the Launch Panel (if that's the right name) with drag-and-drop but was unsuccessful.
Please advise.

Reason: Minor cosmetic improvement
Quick question - are you using Mint MATE (which would be extremely similar for something like this), or Mint Cinnamon, which may be a bit more different?
Right-click on the main menu > Configure > Open the Menu Editor
Add your launchers to the menu wherever you want them.
Close the Menu Editor
Open the main menu and right-click on your launcher > Add To Panel
Right-click on the main menu > Configure > Open the Menu Editor
Add your launchers to the menu wherever you want them.
Close the Menu Editor
Open the main menu and right-click on your launcher > Add To Panel
Nice!
Now I have six lookalike icons on the panel which is only 1/2" high. Can it be made 1" high? The monitor is large, so a larger panel won't take much away from the overall viewing area.
There is a set of images which may be assigned to each icon to make them look different but the selection is meager. Is there a different set of icons which may be used? Can text be applied to each icon in the same way the desktop icons have text?

The height of the Panel is determined in the cinnamon.css file for the theme you are using - specifically, about Line Number 310, Panel section. The default is about 26 pixels - "height: 26px;"
But in addition to that setting, you can override the theme setting in Menu > Preferences > System Settings > Panel

Create a directory in your /home named .icons
You can download any icon sets you want from sites like gnome-look.org or deviantart.com and unzip them into that directory.

I don't know, Sorry. I doubt it. I just use the tooltips.
