mint 17.3-need to install free & nonfree firmware

i'm thinking i need software from free & nonfree sources to fix a shutdown problem i have with mint 17.3 but the sources.list has only one entry.

can i add sources from debian 8.3?

ive never messed with mint sources.list & it seems a little diff from ubuntu or debian.

N.O. - NO !!! That is a very good way to toast your current installation.

You may be wrong about needing to access different sources to fix your shutdown problem. It could just need a config tweak.
