Locking up in Mint,Ubuntu, Debian

I recently decided to try a new distro again, so I erased my Sabayon partition (which was working fine for months) and this time I went with Debian, having not tried it before (but having used Ubuntu).

It installed fine, but after the first boot the monitors would go into power save mode randomly, whether it was idle or I was in the middle of doing something. When it was quiet enough to tell, it sounded like the pc fan would spin faster as well. I went through Debian, Ubuntu, and now Mint (most recent versions of all, as of 2 weeks ago) and have had the same problem with all of them. I know that they're all built on the Debian base, so to have the same problem with all three distros doesn't surprise me. The problem will happen anywhere from a couple minutes into the session, to an hour later, but it will almost always happen within a half hour. The only way to get it working again is to hold the power button until it turns off - ctrl-alt-del, esc... nothing else works.

I've tried using different video drivers, disabling any power management, and booting into the recovery mode with advanced video drivers disabled. It's happened in both XFCE and Gnome, and on the command line after exiting Gnome. I've searched the web for a solution but I'm finally at the point where I need to actively find an answer. This question could be posted in the Debian or Ubuntu forums as I've had the same problem with all three distros, but as of now I'm using Mint so that's why I'm posting it here.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

To start with, we need a lot more information.
What hardware do you have - graphics card, cpu, chipset etc, and which drivers are used?
What's in the logs? Here I believe /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ~/.xsession-errors are most important.
Do you know what drivers you had in Sabayon?

One thing that can be revealing is to login via ssh from another computer when monitor goes off. This way you can see if system is still up - if so, I bet it's just a problem with video-driver.

Without knowing anything, my first guess is you have an ATI Radeon-card and gets the wrong driver. (Why do I guess this? Because it has happened to me with all 3 ATI Radeon card's I've had.)
What I did then was remove - purge all ATI drivers and install ATI:s own, after that everything works fine.
But of course that's just a shot in the dark, please return with more info!

(And when monitor goes off, try the "Magic-SysRQ-Keys": Press [Alt]+[Print Screen] + [s] twice to flush memory to disk, then [Alt]+[Print Screen] + [u] to remount all partitions rw, finally [Alt]+[Print Screen] + [b] to reboot or [o] to shutdown.)

The card is an Nvidia Geforce 9800GT
CPU is dual core AMD 64bit 1.8ghz
Currently using the nouveau drivers in xorg.conf
I'm not sure which drivers I had in Sabayon.
I don't have a /var/log/messages.

The (hopefully) relevant part of /var/log/Xorg.0.log, it was too big to post the entire thing:

The system locked up while I was collecting this info. I had ssh'd into it prior to it locking, and after it locked and I switched the monitor input I was able to view the ~/.session-errors (and nothing had changed), but after I exited out of that it wouldn't let me do anything more on the command line, but it didn't say it killed my ssh session. It didn't say it killed the ssh session after I manually powered off, either. The key combinations you gave me didn't do anything.

It doesn't really sound like a driver issue anymore, that wouldn't affect ssh.
Also I didn't notice this part in your first post "It's happened ... on the command line after exiting Gnome" I guess that means X wasn't running at all?

Strange you don't have a /var/log/messages, I don't have Mint myself so can't really check what logfiles there are.
Check your /var/log directory to see which files have been updated recently (#ls -lt will sort in time-order), it might tell you which logfiles to search.
"#dmesg |less" will show a lot of info too.

As for the "Magic-SysRQ-Keys", seems they are not enabled in Mint - not all distros have them enabled for some very strange reason I just can't understand.

I can't say for sure that X wasn't running - I booted into X, then ctrl-alt-F2'd into a new console, so there could've been X processes still running in the background. That's why I say that it happened after exiting Gnome, and not just that it happened at the command line.

I looked through dmesg but there was nothing that stood out at me.

I guess I'll have to forget about Debian-based distros for now. Shame too, I liked what I saw from Mint. I'm sure it's some bug in Debian that got copied over into Ubuntu and Mint, but I'm really surprised to not find any information or forum posts about it.

Thanks for your help.
