LMDE2 chinese support on terminal

Hi there,

How do I display chinese on terminal ? I had it last time fresh install but now it doesn't show chinese character other than "?", I installed some chinese fonts and I tried that but still not working, I changed the fonts setting for mono space but still can't get chinese displayed, but I can have chinese in all other apps not using mono space fonts any hints, thanks !

By terminal, do you mean the system console without a display manager running or a terminal program you're using on your desktop?
If it's on the desktop, it would probably help if you mentioned the desktop environment/window manager you're using and the application you want to modify (xterm, konsole, rxvt, etc).

I don't use Mint or Debian, I just have a Chinese wife so I'm going to try to figure this one out for personal reasons. I also do some hobby stuff with GTK and QT so I have an idea where to start with this. If you want to move it to another thread I'd probably just chase you over there...
Display managers can assign resources (i.e. character encoding), so can desktop environments, but normally if the application requests a specific resource, the other two will provide it. Also, you are only reporting the problem when using a specific application which indicates the issue is in the resource request coming from that specific application, so that seems the place to look first.
There is a name associated with your terminal application, it's normally in the title bar of the application when it's running, can you tell me what it is?

The default terminal app for LMDE2 Cinnamon simply called "Terminal" doesn't show a specific name, or I can search for help.

Open your terminal and type this line in
Code:
ps aux | grep $(ps -p $$ -o ppid=)| grep -v grep
The terminal application will be on the far right side of the output.

If it says "gnome-terminal" (Like suspect it will), this guy got big5 running on his ubuntu/gnome terminal setup

Yes and thanks it is Gnome-terminal, the problem was caused by incomplete language support and some flaw on SCIM that I used to input chinese. I installed the language pack and it still doesn't do any chinese, untill I change the UI to chinese and SCIM worked, I then change back to English it still work, I don't have this problem with previous version of LMDE/Debian. I know SCIM is bit old most people gave up using it, but it is still the best non English input app to me.
