Linux Mint 9 Freezes/Hangs
 

Hi,

When I boot up my system, it boots up normally after working for some time, it hangs and freezes showing some black and white vertical stripes blinking on a blank screen. I've tried rebooting the system using ALT+SysRq+REISUB for three times due to this problem.

I hope during the freeze that occurred for me, I was not able to access my mouse and keyboard (apart from hitting ALT+SysRq+REISUB ).

Application I'm working while facing the freeze: Firefox/Chromium with 5 Tabs, Rhythmbox, Nautilus.

There seems to be a solution for linux mint 8 helena when faced with similar freezes and hangs in it and this resolution is mentioned in the first link I've provided.

Hence I've tried the following based on it:
1. I did not install the kernel as Isadora itself comes with the kernel 2.6.32
2. I added the repositories to /etc/apt/sources.list
3. Imported the appropriate GPG key successfully.
4. Executed sudo apt-get update successgully
5. However when I ran the command:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4

I get the following:
Could someone please help me resolve these issues?

Yesterday I tried to create xorg.conf file and add contents to it as per the following thread:

and restarted the system. But I was not able to login as various error showed up and I gave up that method and went to install a fresh copy of Isadora thro' a live dvd. But even while installing for the first tinme I got this freeze/hang issue and I was forced to reset my system. But I was successful to install Isadora in my second attempt to install it thro' LIVE DVD.

But still this problem persists.

Is there any way to resolve this issue?

Possible Video Card Settings
 

I have experienced the same problem although I get an immediate screen with the vertical lines and system freeze when I set (reset) the screen resolution to apparently a resolution the monitor and OS don't like. Try adjusting the screen resolution and see if the problem persists. You can double check the video card, for failure I mean, with another Linux LiveCD.

The newer high end video cards I find seem to have a limited life.

Check to see how much space is left on the root partition with System Monitor, generally though if disk space is low you'll get a warning; 9GB should be enough (my root partition is 6.2GB and about 75% full)
Sounds more like a video issue, any idea what card it is?? ; by the other specs it appears to be an older machine.
What type of monitor are you using??

I'm running an older Asus board that has an onboard nVidia video chipset that didn't want to work with Mint 7 back then. I had an ATI card around (nothing fancy) and that worked OK without any proprietary drivers (currently using Linux Mint Debian Edition).

the above advice on checking monitor settings is good advice also. If it's a CRT wrong resolutions and refresh rates don't work well.

When things don't work right, slow down, take a breath, and write down changes done; advice I still need to follow at times.
After awhile you forget what you did making it hard to back track sometimes. You're not alone in getting frustrated at times and just doing a re-install; done more than one myself

Another thing I have started doing lately is burning CD/DVD ISO's at the slowest rate, especially for OS disks. I was getting some bad disc's before that also made installing a real pain sometimes.
