Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon does not accept password

I upgraded a week or two ago from Mint 20, and have had no difficulties until now.

Starting the laptop this evening, it opened to the log-in screen as usual, but on entering the password it simply returned to the log-in screen.

I assumed at first that I had mis-typed, and then that there was a problem with the external keyboard, so I tried again with the laptop's keyboard, and again with the onscreen keyboard. I have also shut-down and rebooted a couple of times.

I then tried with the CapsLk key on, and received the expected message "Invalid password, please try again" ; however entering the correct password returned me to the log-in screen again. It was only at this point that I realized I had not seen that message before.

This is an HP Pavillion dv6 notebook, that dual-boots Mint and Windows 7. It has been running Linux Mint (first 19.3, then 20, and now 20.1) for most of a year. Windows 7 is used rarely, and never goes on-line. Windows is running correctly.

I found this article:
https://linuxhint.com/linux_mint_reset_password/

which was interesting, but because the log-in screen is ignoring, rather than refusing my password, I thought it safer to ask for advice!

This sounds very like a story I heard in the April 30 episode 407 of Going Linux, involving a slightly older version of Mint.

You may want to check it out, starting at about the 19-minute mark.

That was interesting! (it is about the 19 minute mark)
It encouraged me to keep looking, and I found this:

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtop...?f=46&t=347950

and I was struck by the comment about the hard-drive being full ; I opened the laptop with a live usb key and deleted several files, and on rebooting the log-in worked normally.
Thanks all!

Glad I was able to give you a useful hint, and glad you figured out it!

Posting what you found may help others in the future.

I apologize for the typo. I went back and fixed it.
