Is Mint 16 a failure?

I donīt consider my self as quite a newbie though not a computer nerd. But I do have some basic knowledge. However one begins to question one self when I install Mint 16 and nothing works. This is what happens. I install "Big-cursor". Nothing happens. I install "Virtual box". Both those are found installed. But they are not in the menu at the menu bar, and they are not to be started at any place in the OS located by me. So am I making some mistake or is the OS (Mint 16) failing in putting software to the menubar?

What desktop environment are you using?

You can use the whereis command in a terminal to find the executable files and start them from the terminal; wildcards are accepted. I prefer it to locate for that purpose because locate finds everything; whereis specifically finds executables.
