How to partition a storage drive for a Win10 and Linux Mint 18.3
 

Hi.

I've had 8 concussions ... my thinking process often works opposite of how it should. (I've edited this short Thread 20 times already!). Bear with me!


I have identical Crucial BX300 SSDs and want to use one of them for external storage.
The primary drive is dual boot Win10 and Linux Mint 18.3.
The second drive is attached with a USB / SSD adapter.
How should I format/partition the external drive so it will accept either Windows or Linux files that I want to store, depending on which OS I'm using at the time?

My computer is Dell OptiPlex 5040 with only one bay for SSD that I can see.

I suppose this is a simple question, appreciate a simple answer...if possible! :)

I think using NTFS would be my choice for file system. Mint should be able to read and write if the user has permissions.

A filesystem is a way to put files on a partition. A partition is a way to slice up a hard drive.

I had almost decided to just use Ext4 and put Windows storage in a separate drive, but I think I'll try your suggestions...it would be more convenient! Thanks

You need the ntfs-3g driver to read/write to ntfs filesystems from Mint. It may be available in a default installation, if not it is simple to install. This is explained in detail at the site below. You may need to change owner:group on the partitions, depends on your setup and users.

You realise that current Mint version, recently released is 19, not 18.3?
