Question How many Mint version upgrades without a re-install?

I'm curious, how many times have you upgraded Mint versions without a re-install?

I did the in-place upgrade from 18.1 to 18.2 and used that for a long time with no problems. They have made that very easy to do.
Normally, I do a fresh installation, as I did with 18.3
I have done so many installations that I have it down to very little time. There is no real point for me to do the in-place, really. But for a beginner the in-place upgrade is convenient.

Several - ever since Clem and the team changed their recommendation. The machine in question isn't mine, but as our Texan friend above alludes, it is much more convenient for "she what must be obeyed" ....

You do have to be aware that an in-place upgrade is not exactly the same as a fresh installation. A fresh installation will bring in a new graphics stack, with different capabilities, and perhaps new problems (or solutions...).

I upgraded 17.2->17.3, then fresh installed 18 because I was going to be using a new desktop environment (KDE->MATE) and the move over from upstart to systemd in 18 was going to involve quite a large change.

I've then upgraded 18->18.1->18.2->18.3 and intend to also upgrade 18.3->19.

I have so much software and so many specific configurations that a fresh installation of a new operating system version would take me several hours to get up and running properly. If I can get away with upgrading then I will do it.

Probably in Clems blog somewhere - try around the 17.3 release timeframe.

Hi

Follow this post for the patches for 17 and 18.

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtop...1343&start=140

I currently am running 4.13.0.32. On both my systems first gen i3 and second gen i5 cores. So far no new kernels have been on the update manager I even checked today.

Marked vs unmarked updates in Update Manager

I looked over the link and some of Clem's postings. I believe I can upgrade now when the need arises. I do have a question about the update manager. Some of the level 3 updates are marked for installation and some are unmarked. So far I have only installed "marked" level 3 updates. Should I install all level 3 updates?

Which ones are not marked with level 3? Could be your update policy

Check update policy in update manager? The default for the policy is the middle option. Which is recommend for most users.

I tend to install each update level each by themshelfs than reboot. Though not necessary I do anyway. If you are using 17.x install timeshift than perform a snapshot than install updates just in case.

Personally, I install updates from all levels and have never had a problem in the 2 years I have been doing this.

On the other hand, I make reasonably regular images of my system, so can easily roll back the system if problems were to occur.

Level 3 updates should be installed, in my opinion. That is the Level that is recommended.
The Mint developer, Clem Lefebvre, discussed it in more detail here.
