I installed it but when I start up my PC it says to login and I put my correct login information and a command line comes up "steven@steven~" and what the heck do I type~!?!?? I dont want to go to the command prompt LOL i just want linux to start up

I think I have to type something like "find boot/grub/stage1" or "find grub/stage1" but says File Not Found... i Just wanna type BOOT~!! lol

What do I do~~??? haaaylllllllllp

Code:

$ startx
You can adjust the init script to start at a different runlevel that will give you a graphical login screen. To shutdown, in a terminal get root:

Code:

# shutdown -h now

I used "startx" but I get like errors "no such file or directory" & "no such process"

What do mean you can not load any CD ?
If you like to install a other distro just boot from the CD on which the distro is which you like to install.
Of course ther cd should contain a iso9660 file
Besure that the CD drive is the first boot able device , check you're BIOS settings.

Post your hardware system: what motherboard, what other hardware, what BIOS. When you boot up, select the BIOS menu option. This could be a function key, the DEL key, the ESC key. It depends on the BIOS. Then find the BOOT OPTIONS and find the First Boot device to change it to CD. Then install another LINUX distribution.

Yeah Ive went into BIOS already and turned off the hard drive COMPLETELY, and put cd-rom to put first... but GRUB takes over. I think because its on the Master Boot Record/MBR and I cant get rid of it. I installed Linux Mint perfectly fine but then I get a command line login screen and I login with the correct credentials and then I get "steven@steven~" and what the heck do I type~???

btw I am entirely LOCKED OUT of my whole PC.... I can get into the linux command line but I dont what what the heck to write... I thought it was just gonna start up so I can play with the terminal in the GUI and stuff but NOOOOOOOOO I cant even get ANY other CD to boot up because GRUB takes OVER EVERYTHING...

I can get into BIOS,turn off HARD DRIVE and make CD ROM first but GRUB takes over everything and throws me in the command line...

Is there a command I can use to boot from cd-rom in GRUB~???

ronlau9 02-18-2010 02:24 PM

This is odd GRUB is written in the MASTER BOOT RECORD of you're HARD DRIVE.
IF you're CD OR DVD drive is the FIRST boot device it can not present you with the GRUB of you're HARDRIVE if you do have a boot able CD in the DRIVE.
It might be possible if it does not find a OS on the CD drive that it goes back to you're hd.

I think that you press F12 to get to the Boot option list. This will allow you to select what device to boot from. When you first power on the machine, it should tell you what BIOS you are using...please post. And check the Gigabyte website.

If you have a Live CD, use it. But first, remove the hard drive. Boot from the Live CD and report back. We can help you to get your system to work...just tell LQ members what you want to do. Did you want to run Linux Mint?

http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.c...nglish_8.1.pdf

I've taken a look at the Linux Mint User Guide (see above link). It looks like the default install will configure it to boot up into a graphical login, at least for Mint 8. What version did you install? Did you install it from the Live CD, or did you install it from another source...like the 1GB version 8?

Please post the exact manufacturer and model of your monitor. And, please post the exact error messages from "startx". A Linux Mint user can help here, but you could try "xorgconf" and try to look into the xorg.log file to see error messages (or similar commands and log file).

Note that to save changes in the BIOS, you usually need to SAVE the changes to CMOS.

I installed from the Live Mint 8 HELENA CD from within the desktop.
Even when I pressed F12 to select from the boot menu, it didnt work.. the GRUB takes over from the Master Boot Record/MBR... it overrides the user selection.

I had to do something very tricky. I unplugged the SATA HD so it wouldnt be detected and then finally the CD ROM booted up, I put in a win xp cd and right when i was loading XP i plugged the HD back in and in the XP setup, it seen that there was 2 different partitions from my previous Linux installation, I just deleted those and rebooted the PC without installing yet... then after a reboot I went into the recovery console and was brought up with the Windows DOS command line... i did fixmbr and it rewrote an entirely new MBR... I then installed XP and this is where I am now ...

sucks because I just built this quad core PC specifically for Linux to test and get used to... that sucks I guess that aint gonna happen

When you pressed F12, did you get to the boot menu?

There are plenty of LQ members who can help you to get Linux to run on your system. Linux runs on Quad-core systems just fine. Removing the Sata cable so the BIOS does not see it, then putting it back once the OS starts to boot could work.

Did you have Windows on this harddrive before you installed Linux Mint? Many people use Linux Mint so you should be able to run it too. Not sure about the BIOS difficulties with your Gigabyte motherboard...

To be sure that the CD you used is bootable, remove the harddrive with the power off, then try to boot from the CD. If you used the same Linux Mint CD that you booted from earlier, then just check that it boots again. CDs can get scratched, dirty, etc. Cables can get loose too.

Try to reset BIOS options back to default. Save BIOS settings. You have a 1 TB harddrive. Are there any other harddrives in your system?

It would have been helpful to get the error messages from trying "startx" before you wipe the Linux Mint installation. Run the Linux Mint Live CD and see if you can find the boot partition, create a grub boot disk and boot back to try it again to see if we can find what error messages you were getting.

What is the manufacturer and model of your monitor?

bruceleejr 02-19-2010 01:59 PM

Its a dell crt http://images.google.com/images?hl=e...-8&sa=N&tab=wi

There are no BIOS difficulties. Let me elaborate...

I built this PC fresh from the ground up. ALl brand new hardware. ALL.(except for old monitor lol) I put in the newly burned Linux Mint 8 Helena CD and ran it from the CD. Everything works great.

I double-clicked on the "Install Linux Mint 8" that was on the desktop. I installed it. During the installation process somewhere towards the end, it said if I wanted to install a boot loader, I said Yes and chose GRUB instead of Lilo. Well it turns out that after the installation and rebooting the PC, GRUB was installed on the MASTER BOOT RECORD/MBR.

So no matter if I chose to disable the hard drive in BIOS and make the CD ROM the first boot priority, the GRUB took over FIRST before anything else. It was installed on the MBR. Taking over anything. I had to remove the HD SATA cable connected to the MB while starting up the PC WITH WINDOWS XP in the CD ROM. THEN the cd started up without GRUB taking over. Once the XP CD was loading I plugged the HD SATA cable back in and the partitions were then seen at the windows xp parition setup. I deleted both of the partitions that were Linux ( one was a linux one and the other was swap for linux)

After deleting the paritions, I restarted the PC and got into the Windows XP recovery console, the DOS prompt came up and I ran "fixmbr" and it rewrote a whole new master boot record to the hard drive. After that I was able to get things back to normal and install Linux Mint again but this time I chose NO BOOTLOADER. But I still couldnt get into the darn GUI.
