Question How can I change the login pictures used in the slide show?

There's probably an answer to this, but I sure can't find it. When you first fire up your 17.1 box, and before you login, you get that cool slideshow in the background. How do I change the pictures to images of my choice?

I don't know how to change them, but I think the images are located in the subdirectories of /usr/share/mdm/themes/.

customize Mint 17.1 login screen slideshow

The default greeter for LM17.1 & 17.2 is Mint-X. It includes a slideshow that features some stock pictures. The pictures in the slideshow are specified in:

/usr/share/mdm/html-themes/Mint-X/slideshow.conf

So,to change the pictures, just fire up a file editor and manually edit that file. All the stock pictures are in /usr/share/backgrounds/linuxmint-rafaela (or whatever release you have). I just made a directory next to that one and created symbolic links from my personal picture stash to that directory. But, of course, you can skin that cat any way you like.
