Unhappy Fatal Server Error in X: No GUI in Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaele Cinnamon 64-bit

Problems started when I was attempting to demonstrate BIOS to a friend so that she could boot from live media. Even though I did not have a USB key inserted I clicked on the "boot from usb" option BIOS. Of course with nothing in the drive, nothing happened. I was returned to GRUB where I selected Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaele Cinnamon 64-bit. I typed in my hard drive encryption password and then my log in password at the login screen.I was dropped to an emergency shell which again asked for my login. No problem. I started typing but was immediately interrupted and taken back to my login page. After this happened six times a message that went something like this popped up: "X has been restarted 6 times in about 90 seconds. This means that something could be wrong. Will wait two minutes and try again." I selected "OK" at the bottom of the box and went back to my command line. Two minutes later I got this error message:
"(EE)
Fatal server error:
(EE)Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again."
It also suggested that I consult The X.Org Foundation Support at http://wiki.x.org. I did and followed the instructions for the above error message to the letter. No results, changes, improvements.
I would appreciate any and all help because I have time-sensitive school work on the laptop besides the fact that I need the very new, very expensive laptop itself.

Something like this happened to me. I believe something to do with the X server (display server) got corrupted.

What I did was at the login screen, the graphical one, hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to drop into tty1 virtual console.

From there:

sudo aptitude remove cinnamon
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade
sudo aptitude install cinnamon

But before you do anything make sure to do a restart and see if this is just a one time glitch.

That's what I would do in your case. I am by no means a linux expert.

OOOOOOO If something is already running you should do a search for it by CTRL+ALT+[F6orF7orF8orF9...]
