d conf will not work properly
 

trying to install Linux mint 16 mate. The problem I have is while installing the following message is generated: (ubiquity:3220): d conf-critical**unable to create directory */root/.cache/dco nf* : permission denied d conf will not work properly

the odd thing about this is that the install program runs until the end, but this message comes at the beginning if you click on the down arrow.

Sorry to hear your having this trouble with installing Linux Mint.
Checking the integrity of the iso file is very important.

What type of media are you using to install Mint, a Live DVD/CD or USB stick?
Is this a Laptop or a Desktop computer?

I'm using a live DVD/CD

Without touching any of the keys let the DVD/CD load. Don't click on the down arrow this time Once it is fully loaded try interacting with Mint first for a minute and than double click on the option to install.

Is this a laptop or desktop computer? What brand?
If I can find your computer online I can read through the specifications find out what processor and graphics card etc...

Is there another operating system currently on that machine?
Windows 8?

The iso that you downloaded did it come from linuxmint.com?
Was it Cinnamon, Mate, KDE or Xfce.....32-bit or 64-bit?

I built myself using a msi 760gm-p23 motherboardwith a 2.8 dual core amd athalon II processor and 4 gig of ddr3 ram.
The version of Linux Mint 16 is Mate and is on a DVD, I rfeceived from my brother. There is no other operating system on the hard drive. However, I do have a second drive unplugged running win 7. Both O.S.
are 64 bit.

Your MSI mobo and processor should be getting along with Mint.
I didn't see the BIOS mentioned on the specifications sheet.

Do you know if your have UEFI BIOS?
If so you may have to disable the secure boot.

Did you check the integrity of that iso file with md5sum before burning it to DVD?
If not the iso file could be corrupt.

I would only trust the iso directly from Linux Mint or where distrowatches main page takes you.

You should have automatic boot in 10 seconds after placing the DVD in the drive w/o pressing any keys.
I would try that since you mentioned that using the arrow key presents that complaint about not being able to create the root directory.
