From what I have read, this audio chip is supported "out of the box" in Linux, but some folks had issues with it years ago. Nothing additional in terms of drivers or software is required. You should be able to install Mint and have it working correctly as soon as you have it up and running.
If not, the first thing you can try is the suggestion by AlbertP
here. If that doesn't resolve the issue, please go
here and follow the instructions. Then navigate to the location of the text file that was created and post (by copying and pasting) the entire results (or a link to them) in your next reply.
Also, just as a suggestion, make a restore CD of Windows XP (if one didn't come with the computer,) if possible and if you haven't already done so, in case for some reason Linux doesn't support all of the hardware on this system.
