Changing themes

I am somewhat new to Linux Mint (12) and am having a bit of an issue changing the theme.

When i first installed Mint I had a set of icons that I rather liked. Somehow I ended up changing that and now in some of my applications, such as DigiKam whenever there is a popup box with explanatory text I cannot read the text, it seems to be an empty box and it was not previously like that.

I cannot seem to modify my theme. I went to Menu > System Tools > System Settings > Appearance. I only see three Themes: Adwaita, HighContast, and HighContrastInverse (see attached screenshot).

Seems that the icon set that I used to have is not there. How do I install new themes? I downloaded one as a tar.gz but am not sure what to do with it. I looked in Synaptic and chose a lot of themes, and installed compiz but I'm not seeing them anywhere.

Any ideas?

Are you using GNOME or KDE or Cinnamon?

EDIT: If it's GNOME or Cinnamon, then I believe you just unpack it in ~/.themes

If the directory ~/.themes doesn't already exist, then make it.

I'm using Gnome. I'll give that try, thanks.
