hi everyone;
from laptop, i downloaded linuxmint-18.2-cinnamon-64bit.iso and burned into a dvd.
i'm trying to install in desktop, so i booted and expected to get it installed from dvd, but get message NTLDR is missing;
key ctlr + alt + del to continue.
fact is that the hdd is fully ntfs formatted and bios sequence is set to try booting first from hdd and then from dvd.
could someone please tell what is that i'm doing wrong?
thanks in advance
dr.
Linux works best on native linux partition types, because it needs to set up it's own permissions, owners, etc. It also keeps track of creation time & access time on files. This prevents windows freaking when Mint lands. PCs don't read minds, so you may (as I do) have to press a key on boot (F10 in my case) to get the dvd to boot. Looking on a Mint DVD, I didn't see NTLDR. It may well be missing.
If you can't beat this, I would switch off, unplug the hard disk, insert the dvd, and see if that solves it.
Shrink the ntfs allocations to allow a new linux partition. Leave it unformatted, and run the install again. Also, getting dual boot working is not trivial; you need to read up, and if you can, back up.
EDIT: Just seen your second post. Things that boot need to be at the very start of cd/dvd/usb or whatever. Partition tables prevent booting. Have you anything in the way?

i realized that ANOTHER NATIVE Linux installation was needed.
i believe that at this time it would be VERY APPROPRIATE that i describe my scenario (h/w), and goals.
this you're reading is from my lenovo t530 laptop. it works OK, no issues with it.
the "creature" motivating my Q's is a HP dx-5150-SFF, with AMD 3200MHz, 4Gb RAM and (it allows installation of) two HDDs, one is WD 40Gb with XP SPK2 OS, and the other a WD 250Gb , empty and NTFS formatted.
why the worry for this OLD H/W?
long ago i run Linux Mint Rebecca on it, and is was like a beautiful tuned fiddle................a STRADIVARIUS!!!
the goal:
to have the 250 Gb WITH Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.2. ; the XP HDD out.
activities so far since last reported ones:
booted on XP, USB WI adapter and its driver (this machine doesn't have WIFI linking capability).
windows explorer verified that BOTH HDDs are SEEN.
downloaded ubuntu-16.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso, and using ImgBurn, burned into a DVD.
booted with dvd, and verified that Ubuntu runs properly, giving the option of either try or install.
selected try, saw its screen and shut off.
unplugged feed and data cable of 40 Gb, and booted again from DVD.
selected to install, which what it's dong right now.
as soon as installation is complete, i plan to boot from DVD with Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.2
reporting:
booting from Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.2 didn't work.
however, from all the web browsing i've doing, i recalled read : "cinnamon 18.2 and Ubuntu use different 'kernels'"
furthermore, this cinnamon dvd is 64 bit, so decide to try a 32 bit version.
downloaded and burned linuxmint-17.1-cinnamon-32bit.iso SUCCESS!!!!
as expected, gave me option to over-write Ubuntu, and installed perfectly.
ironically, i believe from seeing the desktop theme, what i have is THE SAME Rebecca i experimented with year ago.
i am satisfied with what achieved so far, and will NOT go further into 18.2
version.
to the moderator:
i believe we can consider this thread CLOSED, and i would like to CLOSE it as SOLVED.
nevertheless (before doing that), i am having some others issues which i'd like to ask LQ about:
a) during installation, it's mentioned that gparted is included. cannot see how to access to it.
b) same with thunderbird, cannot see where it is.
i will kindly appreciate your guidance to where to post a new thread with these Q's, with new subject .
