Can't login Helena Live CD
 

I have recently burned a fresh Helena live CD, but it won't let me login. So Far, nothing I type in works. What SHOULD work? Is there some way I can get it to boot in runlevel 3? And if so, what command should I use to get it to autologin?

If running the live CD there should be no prompt for log in since it logs in automatically as user "mint".

Yes, you should be able to boot in "recovery mode", which will give you an option to drop to a console in runlevel 3. You might need to hold a cursor key down at boot if grub's options aren't appearing at boot (I can't remember if the timer's set to one second).

I'm actually not sure how booting to runlevel 3 will help anyway. Having difficulties understanding what the actual problem is; might help to describe what you're actually seeing. If you are being presented with a login dialogue at all then something is wrong, since it shouldn't be doing that by default.

I'm not sure I understand the question, so I'll offer a guess. Feel free to tell me if I have missed the boat or assumed wrongly:

You burned a LiveCD and put it in your computer expecting it to "autorun" like Windows? It won't. You must re-boot the computer with the disk in place. On boot-up, you get a quick little screen with an option like "Press F12 for Boot Menu" (your mileage may vary). Hit that key a few times, then choose "Boot from CD-ROM device."

If I have assumed too much, just ignore this. But I mention it because that was my mistake the first time!

Last night, I put in the live cd; my intentions were to review the boot verbiage (I'm thinking that there shouldn't have been any boot verbiage with a live cd, but there has been) to respond here. But lo and behold, it booted just fine. So I proceeded to install, but as always, more or less (please see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d-line-776978/) the installer came to an input/output error and automatically aborted, leaving a broken system written to disk.

When I check the integrity of the cd, there's one corrupt file. Just one. And, apparently, that one file is what keeps the installation from being successful.

So I have another question. May I use the the live cd remastering tool to delete that one corrupt file? Or is there some way to fix it?

In the meantime, since I first posted this thread, I used a Karmic alternate installation cd to install. It worked perfectly. From there I added Linux Mint repositories; sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, and then selected for installation (in synaptic) everything for Linux Mint except ext2. Presently, that's what I'm using. One problem in no sound. But the live cd with the one corrupt file has sound. I sure wish it would install.

Any suggestions?

Wow - checking the disk for errors is definitely a step you don't want to skip. Because my hardware is older and the CD burner in it is hit-and-miss (even in Windows), I always order LiveCDs from a vendor rather than download and burn them. A new one can be ordered from Linux Mint itself for like $10 (USD), but other vendors like OSdisk.com offer the same disk for under $2 (but will add a donation to the project to your cost - which I think is only fair, and kinda cool).
