Can't get to the desktop after installation, white bars and then list of memory loss

I have a lenovo 10181 running windows 8.1 and I downloaded ubuntu and linux mint 64. I used ubuntu to install linux cinnamon onto an 8 gig usb tab but when I try to run it I get a few white bars scattered across the screen and one long one on the bottom. Then it scrolls through a list and gets stuck on x86_64_start_kernal_+0x143/0x152 and it just sticks there until I unplug the machine and reboot.

Sorry, I meant to say memory locs in the subject line.

Did you check your downloads weren't corrupt? (md5 check sums)

I did a check on the media integrity and I've downloaded both unbuntu and mint twice. Maybe it's the usb? Today I'm going to try to burn a dvd and run linux from that.

I was just checking on how to do a dvd and realized I probably did a lot of things wrong, I found this page

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

and I'll follow the steps here and see what happens.

I decided to try a dvd. I used my toshiba laptop running windows 7 and did a dl of the 32 bit linux mint (that's what my laptop has) and it runs from the dvd without a problem. When I start it up the system goes through the exact same steps as my desktop computer, but it goes all the way where my desktop still stops at the x86 line I noted earlier.
