Boot Mint 21 fails -show grub in upper left corner

Hey all.

I have a Lenovo 430 and a T440s.

Both gave simular problems.

First I tried upgrade following the instructions, the problem was it failed to show a "normal" window after upgrading - giving total useless GUI.

Then I tried to install a fresh 21 Cinnamon on both laptops.
Both showed grub in upper left corner when booting - and gave me no options to continue.

For testing I tried install 21 XFCE - same result - grub in the upper left corner.

Your suggestions - please

Regards

John

Do you use UEFI boot or Legasy boot?

Could you post more detailed information on your hardware, at least how old/new it is?

You indicate you tried to upgrade following the instructions, what instructions were those? From the Mint site?

You can use your install media for Mint to check is you have a UEFI install if you are not sure. Boot the Mint media and open a terminal and run the command: sudo parted -l, this will list partitions so check for one named EFI.

You might take a look at the link below which gives information on dealing with the grub prompt *grub>) on boot.

https://phoenixnap.com/kb/grub-rescue

If that doesn't help, you could try running boot repair as suggested at the bottom of the page. If you do, select the Create BootInfo Summary option and do not try any repairs

@jailbait: Regarding boot in BIOS: Both UEFI and Legacy, legacy first, CSM support

@yancek: sudo parted -l both laptops: bios_grub, msftdata (fat32), boot, home, swap

I will look into that link - thanks

John
