ok, for some reason you have a Debian entries in your sources. You are running Mint 17, not Debian testing- this is likely the cause of your problems. Do you know why there are Debian entries there?
You need to look in /etc/apt/sources.list. You should edit that file and either remove the Debian lines or comment them out by putting a # at the start of the line. If is is not in that file look for it in any files in the /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory. After removing it run "apt-get update" again. If that returns no errors run the following and post the output.
No idea. My dad says it may be because Mint runs Debian packages, but I don't know myself. I'll be sure to edit the files as said though, just a minute.
I decided to remove Mint and install Zorin OS 9. Works just fine (took about half an hour to get the WiFi up, but it's working). Maybe I'll end up installing Mint again later with the LiveDVD I have, but I think Zorin will suit my needs more.
ok, it seems that at least your sources were missconfigured, which hints at any number of problems. I think the take away here is that you should be careful when doing anything "non-standard" on you system. I hope Zorin OS works out for you, I've heard good things about it.
I have the same issue. I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but i think it's maybe similiar. 2 Days ago everythings was just fine, i finished my work and turned off my PC. The exact next day, when i turned on the PC, and logged in Linux Mint with my account, there wasn't a Desktop, i mean everything works just fine but Desktop, the icons just gone, but the bar is still there, i can open web pages with Chrome browser, i can do anything but the Desktop is gone, it's black colored and when i'm opening a window on it, it turns gray, i have tried to load a LIVE version, it works great, i've created a new user and it works great with other users, but not with my main user. So if you could help me please, i would appreciate.
Generally, it is not a good practice to add a new problem to a long thread from 2014. You should start a new thread.
It does sound like you simply need to right-click on the desktop and chose a background.
