Debian Desktops ?

ok, I have recently switched back from gnome to kde since kde4 appears to me as the lesser evil compared to gnome3 though gnome is usually better supported in debian.

I have tried a lot of desktops over the years, from enlightenment over fluxbox to xfce, but have always come back to one of the "bloated" desktops, because there's always something missing that hinders a good workflow. Though not fancy, here's a screenshot.

what are using on a debian workstation ?

Squeeze, Xfce.

Arcane 06-04-2011 05:51 PM

Right now i'm not using it but when i am it's Debian + Fluxbox or LXDE(saves pain from downloading big DE also from netinstall) and to be honest there is nothing you can't "fix" from there(to be same like in bloated) using Synaptic, software center(same like ubuntu without ubuntu word) or apt-get-install (terminal) or web browser downloads+guides.

Timothy Miller 06-04-2011 09:26 PM

Wheezy + kde from experimental w/ iceweasel from experimental.

I also almost always use a "bloated" DE. I'm not a fan of any of the WM's, don't like XFCE, and don't like Gnome. I do like LXDE some, but not enough to switch over to it. But none of my machines have an issue with running it and running it well, so I don't mind.

My sisters machine has LXDE on Debian wheezy though. It's old enough that KDE wasn't smooth.

Debian Squeeze + Openbox/LXDE + Conky (which needs more fiddling with!)

EDIT: made a change to Conky by nabbing and fiddling with a config file found in the Slackware desktops thread.

Always assumed that Gnome was dull, but then discovered, just the other day, compiz and © 2011 Enzo Life Sciences, Inc. Not for use in humans. Sorry: gconf-editor then /apps/compiz/plugins/decoration/allscreens/options/ for the drop shadows.

I guess it was to 'fruity' for imageshack, it appears they removed your pic.

(Not a "Debianite", just a bit of advice :p)

Try omploader for your image hosting needs. They don't have any severe restrictions (that I know of) on image content. ;)

Looked into ompldr a bit and it is unmoderated and will store anything up to one gigabyte.

You may use the script they give you to do 'ompload filename'.

Then, if xclip is installed, the address of the thing at ompload will be will be stored on the gnome clipboard or get it with 'xclip -o'.

Incidentally I don't know why people are not drop shadow freaks, what else is there?

Here is something even more drop shadowy than my above post:

replica9000 10-16-2011 10:46 PM

If I read it right, a single file itself cannot be more than a gigabyte, but I supposed you can uploads over a gigabyte of separate files.

I don't like that they have this on their page

Yes I think that's right - GB limit to a single file. As to the we just may not like you thing. At least they are 'free thinking' unlike some facists that might spring to mind round here.

Boys and girls, I'm mystified. Gnome's characteristic is dullness. This can be remedied with wonderful DROP SHADOWS and the like. Why don't you all do this?

Install compiz, then gconf-editor then /apps/compiz/plugins/decoration/allscreens/options/ for the drop shadows. Say goodby to unwanted dullness.

I have two Middle English founts. I wish I could tell you where I found them, but I do not remember. I got them from a couple web-sites with free founts for down-loading.

I've seen lots of beautiful desktops here! Even some artistic work. Keep them coming! :)

Wallpaper slide show.

This is a bit simple minded but thought I'd post it since it defeated me.

Here is how to make the root window background change a la a slideshow: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.p...content=125178 Then download the thing - scroll down to the download button. Then tar vxzf filename it. Then run the executable that is produced in the same directory. Then all you have to do is put in the name of the pictures directory you want it to use.

Linux - Screenshots is the one exception to the forums' "no [img][/img] tags" rule, so you can upload a full-size image and a thumbnail to an image hosting website (e.g. ImageShack, imgur, ompldr), and link to it here using the thumbnail:

I like the one on the right. The minimalist look goes well with the backdrop and colour of the displayed items.

@MrCode
I use ImageBam, but yesterday the forum refused to recognise the URL, so I was forced to up-load from my computer. Oh well. Only an annoyance, not a problem.

I am amazed at how you got all the desktop goodies enabled with Fluxbox! I assume the transparent monitors are Conky. I just figured out how to configure Openbox. My next project will be trying to use Conky. (Actually trying to open the programme.) I hope I can get results as nice as yours.

I posted some config info over at this thread. My ~/.conkyrc and ~/.config/tint2/tint2rc is uploaded to pastebin if you need them.
