"Your monitor didn't report its X- and Y-Size" in Suse 9.1
 

Trying to get a decent screen resolution with Suse 9.1 and my Compaq laptop.

I get the message "Your monitor didn't report its X- and Y-Size" at every startup. The picture doesn't quite cover the screen and the fonts are blocky.

I just can't find a setting in Sax2 which changes anything satisfactorily.

Looked up the specifications for my screen, so I have all the measurements (though no "X- and Y-Size").

Any ideas what to do?

I ran into the same situation with my dell. and what i did is that in the sax2 configuration console i chose the screen resolution that corresponds to my laptop (like 1024*768), and then you click on the expert tab, where you'll see x and y. Input the x and Y sizes listed in the manufacturers manual (for example for mine's it was x=287millimeters and y=215 millimeters, however these numbers depend on the manufacturer's) and save. next time the server starts it is not going to ask you to report the x and y size of the screen.

i used suse 9.1 for only like 10 hours and i switched to slackware 10, i had the same problem my laptop is Dell latitiude cpx j650GT. just use yast or yast2 whatever its called and choose one of the moniter from its list i choose mine Dell laptop 1024x768 i rebooted and no more annoying X, Y msg :)

Yep, this wasn't so hard after all...

I just got the X and Y measurements of the screen from the product manual - I guess you could find them yourself with a ruler - and entered these.

I am having this same problem, but there is no monitor to select in YaST or SaX that fits my resolution of 1280x800. I did get the resolution working by changing values in /etc/X11/XF86Config, which made the resolution display properly, but it keeps bringing up that warning. How do I get rid of that warning when I can't choose the monitor I have. I am running Suse 9.1.

I have the same experience with my SuSE 9.1,. Beside that after your SuSE has been booted up and running, goto

/etc/X11 and edit XF86Config


scroll down to the bottom and changes the resolutio from 800x600 to 1024x768 or what ever you want. Note. you need NOT to change the first pair of 800x600. Instead changes start at the 2nd pair till the last.

I got the same problem with my Acer Travelmate 371TCi whenever I load SUSE 9.1. My externel usb mouse also not detected.
However, when I installed SUSE 9.0, no more that message and my mouse working fine.

I believe it something got to do with kernel 2.6.x

I ran the same problem when I load knoppix 3.4 kernel 2.6 but the problem gone when kernel 2.4 loaded.

Got any comment?

I have a similar Problem with my Sony Vaio.
Acutally, the monitor is recognized and (working with "windowmaker") normally i have no problems at all.

But using the new KDE with SuSE 9.2 I get the same Message as "rollo":
"Your Monitor didn't report its X- and Y- Size".
Configuring this with SAX (as super user or not) does not help:
- The monitor is still recognized properly ;-)
- The ugly message (every time I start KDE) remains

Does anybody know, where this message comes from? With SuSE 8.2 (and before) I never had a problem like this.

Possibly a bit late to help phi but...

I just reinstalled and got (naturally) exactly the same problem as the first time... "Your monitor didn't report its X and Y size etc".

Some hints -

- Find the X and Y measurements from the monitor manual, or else I guess you could just measure it.

- Choose the most generic VESA or LCD monitor driver on offer in Sax2 if your own one isn't listed.

- Test the setting as prompted and don't save the setting unless it works - or else you might regret it on the next bootup...
