yenta_socket: No Such Device

I recently received a larger hard drive for my ageing Toshiba Tecra 550CDT.

I was running Debian unstable with 2.4.25 kernel. I installed Debian Unstable with 2.4.26 kernel on the new drive.

No whenever I try to load pcmcia it fails loading the yenta_socket module.

I did get it working once, but after a unscheduled reboot, it hasn't worked since.

Roughly to get it working, I did the following

modprobe i82365
modprobe ds
/etc/init.d/pcmcia start
modprobe pcnet_cs (nic driver)

and all good. However no matter how many times I do that since the reboot. Nothing

I keep getting that same yenta_socket error

anyone got any suggestions?

It has been a while since I ran Debian on my laptop but I'll give it a try: Open up /etc/defaults/pcmcia (I *think* that's the file, it may also be /etc/pcmcia/config or something similar) and change the PCIC= line to i82365 instead of yenta_socket and you should be good to go. This file is read by the pcmcia init script to see what PCMCIA host driver to load among other things.

If pcnet_cs isn't loaded automatically you may have to add the name of the module to /etc/modules, which is a list of modules to be loaded on boot.
